I'm not Alaskan or in Alaska, but my college roommate was from Nome and I made this just the other day:

Compared to the ulu I paid $20.00 bucks for from the Ulu Factory, I think mine is better in every way, but I'm a bit biased.
My honest opinion is that most knives in the tourist areas are likely to be tourist knives and priced accordingly. That doesn't mean they can't be nice knives, but it does mean they're probably over priced compared to what you can find in the less traveled areas (though in Alaska, there's not a lot in most of those less traveled areas). I paid $80.00 bucks for a rather crudely hand made Chamorro machete on Guam, signed (but likely not made by) basically the last old school blacksmith on the island at the time. Is it worth $80.00 bucks as a tool? Nah. But I regret nothing.Calguns.net, where everyone responding to your post is a Navy Force Delta Recon 6 Sniperator.Comment

Napalm, love that ulu knife!"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
