[b]Other info: This is an early 1917 made Colt commercial 1911 government model that according to the "G" stamp on the frame near the disconnector, was from a group of pistols made to fulfill a government contract. Normally an "S" would be there signifying commercial sales. The finish is about 70 percent there with ordinary wear marks, some patina, and surface scratches. There are no gouges, deep scratches, pitting, or rust on it. As far as originality, the barrel was replaced at some time with a WW2 High Standard contract barrel that is in great shape in it's own right with an excellent bore. The firing pin stop was of a later model with the bottom radius that is used now for better manipulation of the slide (so they say). I went ahead and put on a Cylinder and Slide early 1911 repro FP stop that is correct for this pistol. I have the non-original one that goes with the sale. The springs seem tight and would indicate that they are replacements. The left grip panel has 15 rows of checkering between diamonds and the right grip has 13, so although they are original period grips, they are mis-matched. The seven round lanyard magazine is a reproduction from Metalform. All other parts look to be original with the pistol. NOW FOR THE TWO ISSUES ON THIS: The front sight at one time was taken off and an aftermarket target sight was silver soldered on at sometime in it's existence. That in turn was eventually taken off and the area around it cleaned, hence the bare steel spot around the front sight area. The slot for an original sight is still there, however, the tenon which was originally a small round hole was widened out in length to accept the narrow tenon that was used on the new sight. I have included a C&S repro front sight that has the original round tenon. I would figure that it could be mounted somehow but that would be left to the ingenuity of the new owner. Colt had a repro front sight for there newer repro 1918 models that actually had a narrow tenon, but they have been discontinued and I could not find any. Brownells has a version that would work, part# 899-000-005WB made by John Turnbull, but it is shown as back ordered. SECOND ISSUE: Someone at one time (probably the same dude who put on the front sight) bubba'd the feed ramp on the frame which was a common thing for people that thought they knew what they were doing to attempt, thinking that it would improve feeding of different types of bullet profiles. Instead it was overdone as seen in the pics and it's out of spec. I have manually fed dummy ball rounds through it and sometimes it chambered and sometimes it did not. It still is not acceptable and I have not attempted to fire this pistol because of it. The ramp would have to be welded up and machined down to proper specs or perhaps the barrel around the feed lip MAY be able to be modified to get it to work if it does not jeopardize the case support. Only a trusted 1911 gunsmith should be doing this, which is what the previous owner(s) should have done in the first place. Live and Learn. I can have these two issues taken care of if I had the time and money to do so, but I don't and that's why I'm selling it for a decent price in my opinion. I have seen other contract commercial pistols now and then on collector websites in this serial number range fetching anywhere between 1800 and 3100 depending on condition. Since this does have a few of the original parts missing and because of the two issues, I have priced it accordingly.
