    Brake recommendation

I have two different Rem 700s that I'm looking to put brakes on. In both cases my goal is to lessen the jump so that I can hopefully stay on target at longer distances. Having trouble seeing the impact on a miss.
One is a 20" barrel and the other is a franken build I picked up cheap. It has a 26" barrel.

    The American Precision Arms
Fat Bastard brake seems like a well liked product and after looking over their site, they seem to have several other options as well.
Any guidance here would be much appreciated.

I thought about getting a brake for the same reason. Then I just realized, you can turn down the power on the scope and see the impact. But I'm shooting a .308, if your shooting something bigger, you may need the brake.

I have two rifles with muzzle brakes made by Harrell's Precision. Both brakes work great, and the brakes only cost $30.00. http://harrellsprec.com/index.php?

I have a fat bastard on my 300 win mag and love it. I also have the little bastard on my 308 bolt and semi auto and they work great. You are able to stay on target and there is no recoil you will not be disappointed with either brake.

I have an APA lil'B on my 6.5 creedmoor, it does a damn fine job. Another top choice could be the JEC custom brake.

The nice thing about the APA bastard brakes is that there is no timing needed, it's all done with a built in jam nut system that you can do yourself.

I would like this thread alot better if every response went like this:

"I recommend XXX brake because of reason YYY"

Where YYY is useful information such as "seems to work, really cheap." or "compared to others in class, it has the greatest recoil reduction, if you don;t mind the goofy look" or "has up facing ports to limit muzzle rise"

So us folks can really decide based on your recommendation if the brake you suggest meets OUR criteria.

Ross Schuler- cheap. Works just as well as jec brake.
Fat bastard- more expensive version of Ross Schuler brake due to higher quality polishing.

Lots of good brake reviews on you tube showing the brakes being fired on the same gun, same Ammo and same sled...

You can see the reduction in recoil on different models of brakes.....

Muzzlebrakes work by redirecting spent gases so the more port volume or surface area the better.
Also they work better if they have rear facing ports.
The clamshell style brakes are the most effective.

I have the APA Fat Bastard and the APA XXX. They are exceptional brakes for reducing the rear recoil when it otherwise could be painful because of the angled ports. For smaller and lighter guns, the standard style brakes are fine. They have flat ports with an asymmetrical top and bottom to simply push down.

In fact, if your R700 is a short action case, I'd just get the $45 Ross brake since that's more than you will ever need. Now, I'd would recommend against putting the APA Fat Bastard on your 20" barrel. The directionality of the APA or other such brakes make the shockwave come back in a tighter angle. This can cause some unnecessary brain rattle. I have an AR-10 that I don't even like to shoot since it has a brake built into its short barrel. For the 26", it would probably work fine.

Take a look at the AI or Sako brakes, which are more traditional style. They have large, open flat ports with a wide base and thin top. These are nice since it works excellently keeping the muzzle from jumping and the shockwave is a lot more benign.

So, really, there are a few other considerations that depend on your personal needs apart from the perception of being more efficient or flashy looking. For me, with smaller cartridges and shorter barrels I willl generally prefer big flat ports. If I am shooting a boomstick with a long barrel, I'll want the angled ports.

I've got a few "other" brakes (Harrell's, Vais, Active Tuning Solutions, Schuler).
However, even at 46, I'm juvenile enough to have been wanting one too for a while now...just so I could tell people the name of my brake.

In my defense, their videos do make it look very effective as well.
