    Is it acceptable?

To ask a gunsmith to demonstrate the thourough cleaning of one of your guns? Paying his fee of course.

On my M4, all I do is run a bore snake down the barrel because I don't want to take anything apart that I can't put back together.

On the handguns, I do a field strip and clean but, have never done a "detail strip".

    Thanks

If you can field strip the average semiautomatic pistol, your AR will be no challenge. Zfields is right. Check out youtube. There are literally THOUSANDS of videos demonstrating how it's done.

Today we live in an age where we look it all up on the web. Which is perfectly fine and a lot quicker.

However if you want some personally attention and get some first hand knowledge seek out a "real" gunsmith. That's what we did in the old days (pre-internet).

That is how it used to be done before the internet.

If your father/grandfather/friend/army didn't teach you to disassemble a firearm and clean it you asked the smith at the gun store you bought it at.

Maybe it shows my age (and I'm not that old but have been handling firearms since I was a small child) but I remember talking to smiths at gun stores and asking them questions and their opinion on everything from ammo/caliber choice to how the heck do I take apart this old colt huntsman and clean it.

If you're uncomfortable doing something don't feel bad about asking for help. Better to get help than to dissassemble beyond your ability to reassemble. That being said - do you know anyone who was in the military - they probably know how and would be glad to show you free of charge. If you don't take it back to where you bought it and ask if someone there can show you. These options are free, if you really want to pay someone to show you, go ahead, its not a faux pas.
