We don't know yet what California law will require, but if they require us to comply with the ATF's regulations for manufacturers we will need:
- Serial number;
- The model, if such designation has been made;
- Your name (or recognized abbreviation);
- Caliber or gauge (misspelled "guage" on the ATF website)
- The city and state where it was manufactured;
So I was thinking that this is a lot of information to be engraved on a regular pistol frame. Reading the info on the ATF site I see that the only thing that needs to be engraved on the frame is the serial number. The rest can be on the slide and barrel. That's how my Sig P228 is: just the serial number on the frame, the make, model and place of manufacture on the slide and the caliber on the barrel.
If California law follows federal law it seems you could just have the serial number on the frame. I know it's not against the law to put a different slide on your pistol, so I'm guessing that you would just need to make sure that all of the markings were in place on the frame, slide and barrel. After that you should be able to use any slide you please.
Any thoughts on this?
