How much is a little bit? Tell us as much as possible so we can get an idea of what's going on with your rifle.

    Sounds scary and/or weird.

Please don't fire the weapon until it has been checked out by someone reasonably qualified. Safety first.
    It's not PTSD, it's nostalgia.

Barrel should not move, period. A pin prevents the barrel from moving left/right. The pin fits in a notch in the upper receiver, then is held down by the barrel nut.

        Is this a home built?

it moves left to right about 1/8 of an inch both ways, the gas tube moves with it but not the gas block. i think if the gas tube was not on there the whole barrel would unscrew. but no way to find out since i dont know how to remove the barrel. thanks for the help

What sort of handguards do you have? Free-float, or standard? Take a pic if you're not sure.

The barrel nut holds the barrel to the receiver. It shouldn't move if you've torqued it correctly.

            Who built the upper?

they are regular hand guards, the upper is made by stag.

My brother in law had the same problem with his Stag 2H. He just called Stag and they fixed the problem and paid for shipping. It only took about a week and a half.

                Call Stag and good luck,

they have to take off the handguards pop out the little gas tube pin form the front sight pull that out and then tighten the barrel nut till the next notch lines up then reinstall the gas tube the little pin the handguards then all should be well

but make sure it is the barrel moving in the upper assembly not the upper sliding slightly back and forth in the lower receiver

so test it by taking the upper off the lower and see if the wiggle is the barrel

Proper torque or lining the gas tube should not be the problem. The barrel is kept from moving left and right, from the index pin in the barrel extension lined up in the notch in the upper receiver. Something is f*ed up with your upper.

Had the exact same problem (about 1/8 left and right) with my Stag 2T and it turned out to be a loose barrel nut.

Take TKM's advise and do not fire it.

Mine was under warranty from Stag, but I took it to Ammo Bros (Cerritos) and their gunsmith Brad fixed it and gave it a good cleaning for $40 (took a few days as he is usually back-logged).

Would have probably cost more to ship it back to Stag for repair and would have taken much longer.

                            1) DO NOT fire it.

                            2) Bring it to be repaired. AR15Barrels ia a good choice.
