NNPC Handgun and 3-gun match Saturday

This coming Saturday, 9-14-19, the No Name Pistol Club will hold its fun action pistol and 3-gun match at Burro Canyon, It starts at 9 AM at Range 1C, to the right as you enter the range, across the road from the office. Check in with us, not the office. Cost is $35 for range rental, targets, etc. Score is kept, usually time plus penalties, for fun and you can keep your score sheets if you like. They help to chart progress, particularly if you shoot with us more than once.

Usually 2 to 3 handgun stages followed by a 3-gun stage. I bring 150 rounds of handgun ammo to be safe (you may not need that much) and a box each for rifle and shotgun. If you do not have a suitable rifle or shotgun, bring .223 and/or 12 GA birdshot and you can use one of ours. Buckshot tears up our knockdown targets so we require birdshot.

Beginners are always welcome, and this match helps them decide if they want to continue with competition, gain experience with us and then proceed or just keep coming out for fun - drawing from holster, rapid fire, some movement, hostage targets, shooting from cover, etc.
First time shooters often start from the low ready position, rather than from the holster, so you can participate even in you do not have a holster.

Kids are also welcome so long as they are old enough to handle firearms responsibly.

The match is this Saturday...next month (Oct 12) is our annual OK Corral match, where cowboy guns are encouraged but not required. You can always shoot what you have.

Tomorrow - come on out, have fun, meet like-minded people. Rapid fire, draw from holster - all the stuff the ranges don't let you do....

Hi... I have been seeing this club/match for some time, and now that my 11-yr ol' kid has just started into firearms, wanted him to get enjoy some "competition." However, I feel that the bigger clubs, etc. with their many stages might be too much for him right now.

        A few questions:
        1. Does it necessarily have to be 3-gun or 2-gun? I am thinking of just pistol for him now.
        2. Does it have to be 9mm or above? Could he shoot with .22LR (Glock with a AA conversion kit)?
        3. Anything else you think we should know?

As for my kid demonstrating safe handling - here are some of his recent videos in YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/kntmukai

        Thanks in advanced!

Oct 12 is the next match.
You guys are welcome to come out! Youngsters can shoot .22s. You can always choose to shoot any stages and not shoot any you don't want to. Some of our members do not shoot in the 3 gun stage. Newcomers often start from the low ready position, so no holster can also be accommodated.

We keep score, but it is just for fun and your own personal performance tracking. This is great way to try out competition with no pressure. Remember to check in with us at Range 1C and not at the office. $35 covers range rental, targets, etc. No one makes a profit.

3 gun has been dying out, probably because the shotgun part is ridiculous. They are expensive, and the least practical gun used. What they've been doing in AZ is letting people use handgun for the shotgun part, with the stages slightly modified to fit. Like no flying clays, etc. Or they've let people substitute a PCC for both handgun and shotgun. Something you might consider for the future.

Our guys seem to like the shotgun part - they like to send the 4x4 knockdowns flying. We have let people use PCCs as well. The wooden knockdowns last longer when shot with birdshot than buckshot or bullets, though. Some of them just use Mossberg 500s, which are not expensive. We rarely have flying clays in our stages but we have a few times over the last few years.

When you say the shotgun is the least practical gun used, how so? It is very practical for home defense, I believe.

Our next match is next Saturday, Oct 12th.

I started going to this 4 months ago (haven't missed one yet) to try shooting something while not on the square range and to add some time stress into my routine. Let me tell you, doing shorter sessions every month vs one big one every 4 - 6 months and shooting a stage someone else has thought up makes a huge difference. You learn things about yourself to fix / work on. From what I've seen everyone's there to have fun and get better, so I'm sure you and your son will have a great time.

For me shotguns kick a lot compared to other weapons, are slower etc. and to be honest aren't my favorite weapons.

BUT they are versatile, reliable, and common weapons. One day you may be called upon to operate the very common and still very effective pump action shotgun. I rather at least try and get better with them then cut them out of my "diet" completely. Like mentioned by cali, they are cheap (used hunting models can cost as much as new high points) and still very, very deadly when it comes to self defense and hunting to food (not that I know how hunt yet).

Thanks - that is our goal...to have fun safely while still being a bit challenging. It is nice that we don't get a huge crowd so things move along quickly but still in a laid back, everyone pitch-in kind of way.
