The second bullets are also .308 in diameter and used for cartridges like the 30/30 because of their flat point they can be used in tubular magazines where the point of the bullet rests against the primers of the cartridge ahead of it in the magazine. You do not want to use pointed bullets in guns with tubular magazines (like the model 94 Winchester lever guns) as the pointed bullet tip of one cartridge can impact the primer of the cartridge ahead of it in the tubular magazine and set it off.

Generally people who shoot lever guns use flatpoint bullets for this reason.

Shooting a bolt action rifle or a rifle with anything other than a tubular magazine you want to use pointed bullets as they retain velocity (and energy) better down range.

For the medium (308, 30.06, etc.) cartridges people generally use 130 grain up to about 200 grain bullets for hunting, etc. people shooting the big 30 caliber magnums (300 win Mag, 300 H&H, 300 RUM, etc.) usually use the 150 up through 220 grain bullets for more energy and longer range hunting.
Thank you for answering my questions specifically. I am trying to load for 308 win... So those won't work for me?

You can load either the xtreme "30" which are 110gr plated for use in a 30 cal carbine or the "308" which are generally loaded in calibers like 30-30 in your .308 WIN.

The issue you need to deal with is if you load those in your .308, you need to keep track of the velocities, as plated bullets will only take so much before you start stripping the plating off. Xtreme lists their speed limit for their plated at 1500fps! You are going to have to download your 308 Win seriously to keep a 110gr or 150gr bullets under 1500fps. It can be done with a powder like 4198, but it probably is not for the beginner.

        Make sense?

PS - If you want to give it a try but are a little fuzzy on downloading normal rifle powders, give Trailboss a try. There is a generic load advice page on Hodgdon's web site on how to approach using Trailboss in a load exactly like you would be doing with either Xtreme's 110gr RN or their 150gr FP bullets in your .308.

Amen to that.....the way some people behave you think that the OP's are quizzing them or just want to play "Who's smarter than a <blank>".......

I might add.....the jacketed .308 bullet down to 100gr and up to 200gr can be a blast to play with reloading in .308 Winchester......I reload 110 gr jacketed hollow points at 2200fps for 250 yard plus squirrels.....That flat point plated might be fun for lower velocity blasting at shorter distance(75 to 150 yards) varmints or water bottles......the price is a little steep though.....

            Have fun.....

Hrm... I was hoping to make plinking rounds for either or both of my 308's (Rem 700 VTR and Howa 1500) -- my local range is Raahague's and they pretty much only go to 100 yards... Some may remember I (with help from lwlaml) organized the last big Xtreme group buy for the IE and in that buy, I bought 500 plated 308's that are still sealed as they were delivered... would I be better of selling/trading those for ammo more suitable for me or would those work for now? Powder I have access to is Win 748, Hybrid 100V, And IMR 4064.

Thanks for all the real advice/feedback/info.

The only problem with plated bullets and the .308 Winchester is that you can not push them faster enough to take advantage of the .308. The .308 likes to play in velocities of 2100+ fps to around 3000fps.....

That does not mean you can't play with the plated bullets in the .308....you just have to be careful you don't push them so hard you strip the plating and start leading the barrel......

Personally, I would sell/trade them and wait for Midway to get some blems in(they just had them).

You can download to the speeds you desire (1500fps or less), but as you get down into those velocities in 308 with the light bullets, dealing with the powder issues becomes a three dimensional problem. I have not used any of the powders on your list downloaded that far in 308. You will need to use some sort of wad material to keep the powder down by the primer, as with any of the powders on your list, you will be below 50% load density (less than a half full case) to be down below 1500fps. If the powder is allowed to migrate up towards the neck, incomplete combustion can occur, a stuck bullet being the likely result and in extremely rare cases a "click/bang" can occur where you have a delayed ignition, a stuck bullet and pressures go off the chart. That is very unlikely with a plated or lead bullet, much more likely (as unlikely as it is in real life) with jacketed bullets which when they get stuck, they are really stuck.

As I mentioned before, those xtreme bullets will be great fun in your 700 and Howa, if you pickup some Trailboss. More fun than a barrel of monkey's with bullets like those in a 308. I have a freind who loads his 300WM with lead bullets and Trailboss, his 12 Y/O daughter loves shooting it. A real powder puff plinker.

                  Good luck, have fun.

The powders you have are not suitable for downloading the 308win cartridge.

Where are you located as it would be helpful to someone wanting to help you out. Another newbie mistake: not know what you are doing, need help, then not show location.

I might be able to help you out.

Thanks for the link Criss, trying to pick a dia. for 7.62x39 -- all Russian except for the MAK.
After watching WTC Bldg #7 being razed, and considering it's main occupants..

I stumbled onto this note while checking advanced weapons..
"911 = false flag. WTC 7 was brought down by demolition. 47 floors came down in 6 1/2 seconds - not hit by a plane. Just one of hundreds of absurdities that occurred that day. Wake up".

                          Standard 7.62x39mm is .311/312 except Ruger's Mini-Thirty uses .308 diameter.
                          Hope that's helpful.

For the record, that IS NOT a stupid question.

As you can see, the answer is more complicated than you would think.
