A while back I was having an issue with bullet setback (about .005). The gun is a mil spec springfield 1911. After a ton of online research and posting a question here I learned that bullet setback is a common issue with the 1911 since the round hits the feed ramp and then the top of the barrel forcing the round back into the case. I took the advice of other reloaders and minimized the flare of the case and have a very mild crimp (.4675 - .4680). I have solved the problem and have no setback what so ever with my Wilson Combat mag after 5 cycles of the same round. I have noticed though that with a factory 7rnd mag I will start to get setback after the second rechambering of a bullet and it gets more dramatic each rechambering. With a factory 230gr FMJ round I get about .005 setback every time and with HP factory rounds it is even worse .007 roughly. I have concluded that it is a mix of Magazine feed angle as the Wilson mag sits slightly higher than the Factory mag, and the repeated contact with the feedramp. Now I am not concerned since I have resolved the issue with my reloads and I only load 4.9gr of Titgroup under a 200gr Missouri bullet, so any setback would not cause pressure problems.
I am curious if any of you want to measure a few rounds, cycle and then remeasure AOL to see if this is more common than we think. I never would have even noticed if it was not for messing with a feeding problem awhile back.
