Homemade Snap Caps

I did a search and didn't see anything, so...

Who's made their own snap caps before? Anyone? What was your process and what filler did you use?

Current take is that the firing pin hitting nothing does not damage it. People also dont like the idea of making dummy ammo that looks like real ammo.

To your question, latex caulk does not work, erasers do.

That's what I thought before, but not so sure now. I researched a bit in regards to my HK USP .40 and factory does not recommend dry firing. I'm also thinking training rounds for teaching the wife. My thought was using bright colored plastic for molding the dummy round and maybe splitshot for weight.

when I start handloading for a new caliber I make 5 dummy rounds and and I get some pencil erasers and put them inside the primer pocket, and I paint the bullets tip yellow.

It is stupidity and just asking for an accident to happen.
Snap caps are maybe $20 to $30 max.
Don't be cheap and take chances with your safety or the safety of others.


On dry-firing, most manufacturers recommend against it, but many guns (including Glock and XD) must be dry-fired as a part of the takedown procedure.
