    Don't use the 4895 powder.
Go to the IMR website, you should get a good list there.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

I would never copy someone else' load that was near max. Tell your friend to start at 42 and work up.

      edit: I found 2.8 + 42.5 4895 to work well when I used 4895.

        Load

I'm running a 173gr bullet with 44gr of WCC846 ( BLC-2 ) With OAL of 2.84. I would say he needs to come down to 43.5gr with OAL of 2.84. Right now he's too hot.

My pet load for 308 Win is:

          Federal or LC match brass,
          Sierra 168 grain MK HPBT,
          42.0 grains of IMR 4064,
          Wolf large rifle primer,
          seated .010" from the rifling.

I get good results with that.

Sometimes, I use Lapua brass with Berger 168 brain BT bullets. Another good combination.

IMR and H-4895 are both good powders to use with the 308. I've had good groups with both but better groups with IMR 4064 and Varget. With 4064 41.5 shot under a 1/2" 10 shot group for me.

You're trippin' my friend. IMR-4895 is one of the best powders out there.

Too hot. Also, no such thing as 'match grade powder".

In 1995 or so, I tried maybe 5 different powder, 6 bullets, 5 primers and 5 cartridge cases combanations. Also, worked with different powder charge and seating depth. It took me about 1 1/2 years for the experiments. I came up with the best load as I described.

I have never tried Varget powder. The powder that worked the best for me was IMR 4064 and Vit N150 and N550 were next best. The maximum velocity difference in the 10 shot string was less than 15 fps, and standard deviation was less than 10, also. My M-1A shot consistently less than 1" group at 100 yards with iron sights from prone.

Then, Lake City M852 and M118LR works good as well. So, I bought couple of thousand rounds each.

I've used Varget under a Hornady 168g HPBT Match and got great groups on loads anywhere from 35-43g. Hodgdon recommends 42-46 with 46 being a compressed load. I know that even 43g was really high on the case and I stopped there. I simply didn't want to crunch the powder sticks with this load since it was just for plinking. What I found interesting was that the groups were all good regardless of the load. This was on a Rem 788 bolt gun on a bench.

35g spit the bullet out in the 2200 fps range while factory loads put out over 2700 fps and slightly flatten the primers so I would guess that 46g would be doing the same thing.

OK... I told him to start at 42... go up slowly.

This is right out of IMRs recipe load data

                            Bullet: 175 GR. SIE HPBT
                            Powder: IMR 4895
                            Caliber .308"
                            OAL Suggested Over All Length:2.800"
                            Starting load: 41.0 velocity 2463 42,800 PSI
                            Maximum load: 45.0C velocity 2704 57,800 PSI

I would also start at 42 and work up from there!
