I bought a box of 9mm 147gr Ranger Talons to try out in my Sig. Before I shot them, I disassembled the rounds and found them to contain 4.9 to 5 grains of a ball powder. I reassembled them using 4.9, 4.7 and 4.5 grains of the powder using factory OAL. I shot some groups from the bench at 15 yards.
Surprisingly, this ammo shot .75" groups right out of the box.
The 4.7gr charge shrunk the groups to .5" and the 4.5 grain charge increased the group size to 1".
Disassembling factory ammo is a PITA. This particular batch did not have any sealant on the bullet, but alot of premium rounds do, making them an even larger PITA to disassemble. Still, a 33% improvement in accuracy is significant, although many people would not consider it useful.
Still, it was fun to see.
