Originally I was looking for Fed 215 which I found out are no longer available. Then on advice I started looking for CCI's, but found nothing available locally plus Winchester's getting a bad rap. Now it's on to the Remington 9.5M's which looks like just might be the answer. We'll see?? I'm not interested in buying a brick of these things or popping for the hazmat fee. What I am interested in picking up a couple hundred locally. Now if you know of a store that has 9.5M's on the shelf, by all means let me know. I think I'll wander by Big 5 and Sportsman's today and see what's available. There's also a reloading shop out in Roseville. They might have something stashed away?? Hope this helps shedding light on the problem. Maybe you could suggest where to find 200 non-Winchester LMR's local to the Sac Area???

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I've noticed the following for a while and figured if this thread was about magnum primers, it'd be a proper place to ask.

I haven't shot magnum rifle yet, but looking at this thread I've noticed that Federal primers seem to be bought up most often as the best primers to use for magnum rounds, even though there are offerings from CCI, Winchester and Remington.

From my understanding rifles tend to be a bit finicky so developing loads for them means experimenting with different combinations of components until you find what works for your rifle.

If that is the case, why is it that Federal 215/215m are the most recommended?

I stopped by the 5 yesterday and they had Rem 9.5M's but they ponly sol them by the brick so I passed. I may drop by Sportsman's in the morning. The last time bought primers from them they did have them by the 100.

This is just a guess... but most of the data worked up and posted on the net is a couple of years old. Fed's might have been the least expensive to buy so the 215 was the used most of the time when working up loads?? For what ever reason Federal hasn't been producing any primers for the last couple of years. I don't think the shelves are empty because they sell so fast, but lack of production... I've had good performance from CCI and Remington in the past...

Federal is one of the better makers of rifle primers for consistency. I think RWS makes the best primers, but they are hard to get. CCIs are also very good in my opinion. You can use different primers to tune your load a bit. For very large cases with slow powders (and generally over 100gr of powder), there can be ignition issues with the non-Fed primers. Most will work perfectly fine except in the cases where you have the largest cartridges.

Primers are used to tune your extreme spreads. If your using Fed 205M primers and your extreme spreads are high you can go to a hotter primer like the CCI450 Magnum to fine tune your load.
The Fed215 and Fed215M are the hottest primer made so they get used in alot of overbore cases.
Most reloaders will keep 500 or more of each brand of primer on hand for load development.
You let your chronograph pick your primer not emotion or popularity.

Condor, this may be a bit out of your way but I was at Barnwood Arms in Ripon today and they had 2 boxes of 1,000 count CCI 250 for $43.99, plus another 7-8 individual 100 packs for $4.99 each..

Thanks for the heads up, but yeah, that'd be a trip. By the time I drove my gas guzzler down there and back, I would be cheaper to buy a thou locally and give a bunch away....

You should have bought the brick at Big 5 and been done with it. Not like it costs all that much...

Yeah, pro'bly. But then instead of hunting for deer in Colorado, I could buy T-Bones at a store, or instead of a tuna trip down into Mexico I could get sushi at a local restaurant... or instead of rolling my own I could buy factory ammo at the 5. But that'd be no fun at all. I guess it's the hunt that make things interesting.. But I am weakening...

Thanks for the offer, but I'm good. Sounds like I don't hold a candle to the amount your rolling....
