Good WiFi Modem / Router for Xfinity? Mesh?

I've been wasting money renting a modem from Comcast and want to buy my own without completely breaking the bank. I'd prefer to keep it under $200.

Do I get a router/modem combo similar to what comcast provides or do I get a modem and one of those newer google mesh router sets that spreads the wifi through different rooms? What say you?

Too bad you're not local, I have a extra Comcast compatible coaxial modem doc 3.1 I would have just gave you. Depending on your home size and room layout, MESH is typically very good overall and a good setup for most homes, unlike the terrible extenders that just bounce a already week WiFi signal. Google MESH is very inexpensive and works okay for the price, but if you're really wanting better performance get a MESH that at least does WiFi backhaul such as the Netgear Orbi, but they're almost double the price of the Google, the best MESH setup would be a ethernet backhaul, but neither is necessary if you're just using it for regular web browsing.

This entirely boils down to your needs, your square footage and if you are willing to deviate from your budget of < $200.

(For higher channel-bonding purposes, it is most likely the case that your ISP is phasing out all cable-modems to DOCSIS 3.1)

          - First, it depends on your speed tier.

          - A DOCSIS 3.1 modem may run you $130+
          - Then you would have to purchase your router/access-point setup.

          This would already exceed $200

-- A DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem WiFi Router Combo would probably cost ... ~ $300

          -- A DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem WiFi Router Combo w/WiFi 6 would probably cost ... ~ $400

Unless you are going to scout the used market ... you will exceed the budget if their requirement is DOCSIS 3.1 and not DOCSIS 3.0

How much are you wasting/saving and are there specific needs is really what it boils down to, I guess.
