If you want small and super thin (for comfort) then a S&W M&P Shield in 9mm or 40s&w is a good choice, so is a tiny but pricey Kahr PM9, but I'll give the edge to the S&W for out of the box reliability and a lifetime warranty. The Kahr is a good little pistol but often need a 200-300rd break-in before becoming trust your life to it reliable. Another option is a CCO sized 1911 like a Kimber Compact CDP II

If super thin isn't a requirement then look at a Ruger LCR in .357mag, or a chubby little Glock 26.

Most gun ranges have a rental case. Go there. Rent anything and everything you can get your hands on. You'll get far more information in a single afternoon than anything you will get here. And it's a whole lotta fun!

OP, how big are you? This makes a difference since a larger framed person has a much easier time of concealing a pistol and thus would have a wider variety to choose from.

A compact, single-stack pistol is definitely MUCH easier to conceal and for something that is going to be shot a LITTLE and carried a LOT you should look at the lightest one you can find and then practice to deal with the recoil.

Stainless steel, aluminum or polymer will help prevent rusting from body contact and sweating.

Unfortunate that you live in NorCal, as there is a great opportunity to check out a wide variety of weapons very inexpensively coming up down here in SoCal at the end of this month.

It is the Shooting Sports Expo put on by Turner's Outdoorsman. Perhaps there is something similar that happens up in your neck of the woods.

A 'small' handgun is good for carrying, but also needs to be accustomed to, because it is also harder to hit with ( in general ). There are some very good handguns available, but a small package also usually means much smaller front & rear sights, and grip.

Any and all input is appreciated.

Hello ~ The small J-frame has earned a very good reputation as a pocket/deep cover/ easy to carry revolver, but it's short grips and small sights make it a little harder to hit with.

The small size Kahr, S&W Shield, and Glock 26 also are very reliable and those model slim size also make them easy to carry and hit with, while offering good stopping power ( 9mm ), and ease of reloading magazines over the smaller j frame revolver.

                        Anyway all input is appreciated.

I just picked up a Kahr CW9. After the first 300 rnds, I had one stove pipe due to low charge, min load of Accurate No. 5, and that was one of the first few dozen rounds. Aside from the one hiccup, it's a great little pistol. The trigger is surprisingly easy to get used to and in rapid fire, I can shoot it as well as my Sig2009. I did rack the slide and dry fired it a few hundred times before taking it out on the range because I saw a few youtube vids that said it needed to be broken in. I highly recommend it. Pretty cheap too. People trash talk cheap guns, but I have never had a problem with the Sig Pro and so far not the Kahr either.
