All it has to have is the frame as that is the "part" needing to be "transfered".

And we come to quick question problems.

You are speaking of a handgun and one which uses separate magazines correct?

          What exactly is the situation?

I found a possible deal for my brother. Pistol is brand new never been fired but they lost the magazine. So if my brother is interested does he need to buy a magazine before they do the paperwork?

^^^This. And make sure the magazine has a capacity of 10 rds or less. The magazine is needed for safe handling demonstration before the handgun is released.

Some FFL's do the Safe Handling Demo at the time of paperwork I have been told but every shop I have gone to does it at the time of pickup. The law does not say when it has to be done just that it has to be done before the FFL "deliver"s it to you. (Unless you are exempt)

The law also states that it must be done with that hand gun or with the same exact make and model. That does not mean that you can do it on a Rock Island 1911 when you are buying a Kimber 1911.

Despite what some people will say that they have done it. This is why it is not technically possible to DROS just a frame when it comes to pistols unless there is a substitute pistol of the same make and model to do the demo on.

OP if it is a common model they may have a magazine on hand that will fit and if they are willing it could be done with that magazine. Otherwise ask the shop when they need it buy at the time of paperwork or pickup.
