I see a lot of great handguns in the Private Sales section and many that I've seen are not willing to ship.
Is it really that big of a hassle in CA to ship a gun out of state?

No.But it's a hassle if the buyer flakes.

It's more of a matter of convenience. Some sellers would rather just meet a buyer and complete the transaction at that time rather than dealing with shipping and other issues that could come up. All depends on the individual.

No one on the east coast will ship to NY or CA. Maybe not valid but the rumors run rampant.

Most of the "Will Not Ship" I suspect deals with our hand gun roster reg's.

Since this is a CA Gun Forum, we are used to just seeing CA buyers. We cannot ship hand guns to a CA dealer for transfer if they are not on the "Safe Hand Gun Roster".

Then there's the requirement from all or most of the private shipping companies that you have to ship it via Express Overnight Shipping. That can get expensive. Even when we're dealing with a "Safe" hand gun.

Normally your buyer pays first before you ship. At least that's how it works on gunbroker and elsewhere. In this case, it's actually more convenient than a PPT in which the buyer flakes. If you don't get a money order, discreet paypal, or check, you don't have to take your gun to ship. On the other hand if someone ditches your PPT without telling you, you've just driven to your FFL with your gun for nothing.

Shipping is more common on other gun forums (arfcom/glocktalk/etc), granted those have membership all over the states.

Not only is it a hassle to pack, ship and insure, many FFLs will charge a fee (sometimes large) to receive a gun from another FFL---and you MUST by law ship from FFL to FFL---plus many desirable handguns are not on our "Safety List" and therefore have to be transfered FTF---many folks just don't wanna do shipping.

it costs about $60 to ship a handgun. transfer fees are about $75. makes a good deal not so good. off roster pistols must be PPT or single shot for us peons.

FFL's can ship USPS priority and it can cost as low as 20$. Make your buyer pay extra for shipping if it's not included.

Just ask your FFL how much they charge to ship. If they're gouging you find someone else (though I personally wouldn't do any business with folks who would gouge on anything).

Like I said, if it really were that bad, you'd only see listings in local forums on arfcom, snipershide, glocktalk, and so forth.

A private person may ship directly to an FFL if the FFL agrees to receive it. They don't have to, but many will, especially out of state. I've sold a couple of off roster guns on gunbroker to out of state buyers. They paid for the shipping, which was about $70 to Georgia. As a seller, as long as they pay shipping, I'm good with it, and I don't oncern myself with how much the buyers FFL charges to receive the gun. Most out of state FFLs only charge a small fee because they don't have to deal with DROS and other CA restrictions. It's usually only a 4473 and a call to NICS.

Hassle? Just mail a NLIP form to DOJ with the info on the sale and the FFL involved. You can even add the cost of the stamp onto the sale
