    Man dies, guns disappear!

A friend of my wife's father passed away recently. He had an extensive gun collection worth who knows how much. A step son came into the house and decided he wanted all the guns and just took them. My wife tells me her friend just wants to be done with everything and is not interested in the guns. She is getting a fairly large inheritance so shows little interest in the guns. I'm trying to tell my wife that the gun collection could be worth hundreds of thousands. This guy had money! Maybe if my wife tells her friend about the potential value of the collection, she'll become interested.

How will this scum bag step son sell the guns legally? I'm assuming handguns are involved as well. Yes this happened in California.

He may sell them informally (no FFL), sell them out of state, or just keep them.

This stuff happens all of the time when people pass away - people come out of the woodwork and take what they think they deserve or can get away with. It's sad to see. Best thing to do to prevent it is to document the collection/property in a way that other survivor(s) will at least know what to look for and how much it might've been worth. Telling someone "give back all of the stuff that you took!" isn't very effective.

Notwithstanding the various penal codes, if the widow didn't care then she didn't care. What's the big deal? If I were you, I wouldn't get involved, if you don't have a stake in it you're best off staying out of it.

Can you abuse someone who's not actually alive or present for the abuse?

Their is no "widow". She is in the later stages of Alzheimer's. My wifes friend is the blood daughter of the man who passed away.

Yea when people commit theft and fraud the best thing to do is look the other way and stay out of it This makes it very easy for the perps to justify their actions.

I'm sorry, but your OP made it sound like there was a guy with a big gun collection who died. His daughter (sorry got confused) didn't care about the guns and the step son took them.

                      I don't see any mention of alzheimer's?

You don't have to be the registered owner or even the legal owner at all to PPT a firearm in CA. It's not required by law.

If there's a will and it's unclear that the step-son shouldn't have the firearms, then report him to the police and/or the lawyers handling the deceased's estate.

If there's no will, then the property is most likely the daughter's of the deceased and she should call the police.

If she doesn't care, then nothing will get done and the son has the guns and can keep, shoot, or sell them as he wishes with little to no legal recourse since no one is legally challenging his ownership of them.

Gossip is unhealthy. Don't get involved, especially in an issue originating from chit chat among the girls. If it were your dad or your wife's dad, then that would be another issue.

Maybe the scam bag step son ( op's description, not Mine) is also a gun enthusiast. Who says he is going to sell them. Maybe he and his step dad used to go shooting and step dad told him over the years, "you know, scum bag step son, some day all these guns will be yours....."
