Artillery has been used to trigger controled avalanches in mountain areas since at least post WW2. Early guns were the 75mm recoiless rifle and the 75mm pack howitzer. The 105mm RR and then the 106mm RR were used for this task. Recently 105mm howitzers have replaced the recoiless rifles due to no longer being supported by the Army for maintenance and inspection. I remember reading awhile ago about some Colorado DOT workers who were injured when the 106mm RR mounted on a pickup truck had a breech failure. When the Iraq war heated up the M119 howitzer in use in California was swapped out for an M102 and the M119 returned to service. Attached is a link to a news video showing the emplacement of a M101 105mm gun in Utah. It doesn't mention the gun replaced but from the article I linked to it says it was a 105mm RR, long obsolete in the military. Another video shows 105mm RR and 75mm pack howitzers being used by road crews. Can I sign up for that job?
