Do you ever shoot your bolt-action rifle standing?

    Weird question, I know

I think this can pertain to many rifles, not just bolt-action but it seems like everyone has to bench rest their rifles to shoot. I enjoy doing that at my outdoor range but was kind of bummed when after a few hours, I suggested to my cousin that we try to see how accurate we are at 50 yards while standing for fun but about 5-8 rounds in we were told to sit by someone that worked there. Planning on getting a bolt-action rifle next but was just curious as to why I hardly see anyone standing while shooting them?

Shooting off-hand (what you are describing) is hard. People prefer to do things the easy way, especially if they can sit down while doing it. That's why shooting from a bench is so popular.

In fact, when I was young, we had to stand even when shooting from a bench (ie, the top of a car covered with a blanket). Kids these days don't know how good they have it.

Can't comment on the RO telling you to sit down.

I shoot my Mosin Nagant standing all the time.

I shoot my rifles while I'm standing at the local indoor range here in Vacaville. Not very easy to sit down and steady a rifle in there, so it's either stand or wait until I can take a trip to the outdoor range.

Never heard about anyone making you sit before. Do they think it's inherently more dangerous to shoot while you stand? (Well, maybe if you are Dick Cheney).

All the time, I never use a bench or rest. I might shoot from a kneeling position as well, but mostly it's standing.

I shoot my .30-06 bolt action prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. I want to shoot like I hunt and you never know how your shot will present in the field.

Yes all the time. Mostly because the range I go to does not allow sitting or prone shooting.

I just don't see the point of bench shooting except for possibly checking out some new loads, etc.

I want to develop skills rather than the bench developing skills.

Nice Haha I dunno what it was, some kind of rifle etiquette or something that I had missed but I just don't want to bench rest all the time. I'd like to see how well I'd shoot with only my body as support. I'll have to ask the guy at the counter next time I go to that outdoor range. Aside from guy's shooting AR's, all I would see were bench resters so thought I'd ask.

^ That makes a lot of sense to me.

Hardest shooting contest I ever entered was hit a hundred yard target off hand without using a sling or any other kind of support. I could hit the target, but a guy with a big ol' beer belly won the target by resting his elbow on his shelf-like gut.

I have shot my rifles in all positions when I go through sniper schools.

Get a sling and you'll be amazed at how stable your will become... Also, I find the recoil a little more manageable when standing.

I only shoot my cz 9.3x62 standing. That thing will mess you up with house loads if you are sitting.
