A while back I went out to the AZ desert and shot, I had a lot of fun out there but the trip is a little long. I was wondering if there's a place in CA out in the desert where I can legally and safely shoot handguns and rifles within a few hours drive of Los Angeles?

Desert shooting?

It'd be a hike for you, but we're loaded with BLM land out here in Ridgecrest. One particular piece of land is only 15 minutes away and is used by everybody, including the local CHiPies, for target shooting. You can also drive out into the wilderness and pick a random hill as a backstop. -
Is it still legal to shoot off of Hodge road just before Barstow? If you take the 15 north and exit Hodge rd and make a left and drive down the dirt road there are places where a lot of people go shooting. I was there two months ago and I didn't see any signs against shooting, but I've recently heard conflicting reports about whether it is legal to shoot there or not.Comment

take the 14 north past plamdale. Exit at dawn road, head west look for big hills and piles of brass/shot shells. There might be one closer, but thats the one I know. Keep an eye out for guys on atv's they've cruised right in front of us out there.sigpicOriginally posted by Dr. ElkyIf your a man who wears white sunglasses, your probably a douche bagOriginally posted by CSACANNONEERI've been know to cross dress and go the other way at certain events.Comment

Technically, everything south of the town of Mojave is closed to shooting. Even up against the foothills. There are a couple of areas just about 2 miles east of Hwy 14 and about 1 mile south of Hwy 58 that are okay to shoot at. Also, Lone Tree canyon about 15 miles north of Mojave, west of Hwy 14 is good also.Comment

Here's a map that was posted by JP, stick to it and it will keep you out of trouble. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ad.php?t=43211
Stay north of those areas and you'll be okay. When you think you've driven far enough away from people, drive a little more.

I was curious of this as well. I was up in Asuza this morning at Burro Canyon and during a conversation someone had mentioned that Hodge Road was now "closed to shooters".
After some talks with people I'm getting differing opinions but, am wondering if all of this (mis)information is based on the fact that you can no longer shoot right OFF the highway....and now with the Cellular tower there which some dumb@asses so nicely used as target practice, that entire area is off limits to shooters...But it seems like it's only the area that's within close proximity to the highway. There ARE signs which have been conveniently spray painted out...but that's at area toward the road around the areas I mentioned above (near the cell tower).
BUT....2 months ago We ventured out to hodge road without any worries...No signs stating that it was now illegal at least not as far back as we tend to shoot....etc....Our normal shooting spot is way down the road...Populated by the normal rubble (Why can't lazy bastards clean up after themselves) and spent cartridges....There were several other folks out shooting that day....Some closer to the 15 than we were and some off in the distance....Nobody bothered us for our entire stay and we had no issues whatsoever.
This is just merely my experience in the last month...as well as trying to separate misinformation from reality.....Given the fact that everyone seems to have a differing answer....Does anyone know what the real story is?Comment
