    Long term storage ?

    How would you do it?

I'm thinking about slathering my guns up in oil and lots of desiccants in the safe. Some plastic wrap around the openings to seal it to prevent excess moisture from getting inside.

Or what would some ramifications be if I were to turn them into the local station for safe keeping and filing paperwork to get them back?

First use solvent to fully clean your guns. Then use mineral oil or WD40. Wrap them in some sort of plastic (try to vacuum some air out) and put a dehumidifier in the safe, or just packets of silica gel.

That's what I do for my Mosin, but I don't have a safe.

I would never turn mine in.
I store some of my firearms in some plastic bags designed for that purpose. They have a vapor in them for protection. I wipe them down with Inhibitor oil and put a Inhibitor chip in the bag also. Never any problems. The bags are called Poly Gun Bag www.polygunbag.com www.theinhibitor.com

I have no interest in either company other than their products work for me.

Why in the world would you hand over your guns? Just... why? If you don't want them, sell them.

As for storing your guns, oil them up, and seal them in bags(like maybe the ones diverhunter linked to).

I don't think that police/sheriff departments are in the business of free long-term gun storage. I understand that they will allow you to surrender guns you no longer want or need, which will then be used by the department or destroyed - but that's a one-way street, you'll never see your guns again.

Are you leaving the country for a long time, or ..?

You can still buy cosmolene for long term storage. Slather everything up nice and thick and wrap it in acid free paper or mylar vacuum bags. Store wherever, however, for as long as you like.

I think the police station would be one of the last places on earth I would want to "store" my guns

                Well said

Buy a gun safe, bolt it to the ground/floor of your abode, store everything in there, memorize/keep your Password on your laptop/phone/wallet.

I always wondered if it would work to get a PVC pipe, cap one end, put all the metal parts (not the plastic or wood) in the pipe, fill the pipe with synthetic motor oil, and cap the other end. I used to know some well drilling folks who stored their bits in a tub of used motor oil, wondered if it would work for guns.

What the ? I will store your guns for free, but I will have the same policy as the PD. Once you drop them off you will never see them again!
I don't know if I could ever be away from any of my guns for that long. Have to take them out for a little one on one time and cleaning them just because. I know I'm sick!

First, you need to define what you mean by long term storage. Your options will change depending on the amount of time.
