Volunteers invited to help clean up area shooting range

SANTA BARBARA The public is invited to join local groups in an effort to clean up a notoriously trashy shooting range off Highway 154 in the Santa Ynez Mountains.
On Feb. 10, the Los Padres Council Boy Scouts of America, U.S. Forest Service, local trash company Marborg Industries, and members of the Winchester Gun Club will pick up the countless discarded shotgun shells and bullet-riddled targets -- many of them household appliances -- littering the Arroyo Burro Shooting Area on East Camino Cielo.
Located about 15 miles east of Highway 154, the shooting area is free to use and open to the public. But two weeks ago, U.S. Forest Service officials said they would shut it down if the public doesn't help keep it clean.
During the pick-up, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the U.S. Forest Service will close the range for the day, and Marborg Industries will donate a container in which to toss the debris.
All those participating are encouraged to wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, gloves and closed-toed shoes. Volunteers are also advised to bring sunscreen and water.
Anyone interested in helping can e-mail arroyoburrocleanup@cox.net.
To donate money to the cause, send checks to the Los Padres Council-BSA Arroyo Burro Clean Up, 4000 Modoc Lane, Santa Barbara 93110.
The money will help defray costs such as snacks and temporary restroom facilities.
