    Exempt competition pistols

Does anyone know, if the only competition pistols exempted from the CA drop test approval process are those specifically named? Meaning, if I wanted a competition pistol that is not on the list, then I am still SOL, since it is not on the exempted list? Is there a mechanism that I can appeal and have the competition pistol in question added to the exempted list?

Is this what you are looking for?

The Hammerli 280 pistol is on this list. Last time I saw one, Bridgette Fonda used one in the movie "Point of No Return."

Wasn't Kimber's 38 super pistol used in the Olympics? If so, how come it's not on this list?

      (3) The department shall create a program that is consistent with the purpose stated in paragraph (1) to exempt new models of competitive firearms from this chapter. The exempt competitive firearms may be based on recommendations by USA Shooting consistent with the regulations contained in the USA Shooting Official Rules or may be based on the recommendation or rules of any other organization that the department deems relevant.
The departmental regulations of DOJ in this area are at

Title 11, Chapter 13.7. - Regulations for Olympic Pistol Exemptions

      §995. Exemption of Olympic Pistols.

      (a) The following definitions shall apply to the regulations contained in this chapter:
      (1) USA Shooting or its successor means the organization that is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body for international shooting competition in the United States.
      (2) DOJ means the California Department of Justice.
      (3) New model means a model not previously listed on the roster of Olympic pistols exempted pursuant to this section.
      (4) Olympic pistol means a handgun that is all of the following:
      (A) Is sanctioned for use in Olympic target shooting events by the International Olympic Committee.
      (B) Is sanctioned for use in Olympic target shooting events by USA Shooting, or its successor.
      (C) Is used for Olympic target shooting purposes.
      (D) Falls within the Penal Code section 12126 definition of unsafe handgun” and/or the Penal Code section 12276.1 definition of assault weapon.
(b)(1) DOJ shall exempt new models of Olympic pistols from the assault weapon definition in Penal Code section 12276.1 and/or the unsafe handgun provisions of Chapter 1.3 of Title 2 of Part 4 of the Penal Code, commencing with Section 12125.
      (2) DOJ shall base its exemptions on recommendations made by USA Shooting or its successor. Recommendations must meet all of the following requirements:
      (A) The recommendation must be in the form of a notarized statement signed and dated by the current chief executive officer of USA Shooting or its successor.
      (B) The recommendation must specify the make, model, and caliber of the pistol(s).
      (C) The recommendation must include a statement that the pistol(s) is sanctioned by USA Shooting or its successor for use in Olympic target shooting competition.
      (D) The recommendation must include a statement that the pistol(s) is used for Olympic target shooting purposes.
      (c) DOJ shall maintain a roster of Olympic pistols exempted pursuant to this section.

NOTE: Authority cited: Sections 12132 and 12276.1, Penal Code. Reference: Sections 12125, 12126, 12132, and 12276.1, Penal Code.

If you inform DOJ of this gun and whoever runs 'USA Shooting' maybe things will start to move...

Too bad Olympic Shooting doesn't require off-list older S&W revolvers

Other than shotguns, the only calibers in Olympic shooting are .22 and .177 (air guns).
(Don't know why the .32's are on the list.)

          Here's my question-

Are the exempted guns still importable under SB15 rules?

I don't see any under the DOJ SB15 drop test list.
I wouldn't mind a Feinwerkbau or Hammerli one day to prove it's me, not the gun

From reading the sections, it seems to me that indeed unless the pistol is listed on the exempt list, it cannot be brought into CA. And the only way that additional models can be added to the exempt list is the Shooting USA governing body must make a recommendation to the CA-DOJ to have the pistol added with supporting information to verify that the pistol does indeed meet the requirements of Olympic competition.

Is that how you read it?

SB 269 is currently in front of the Governator and would expand the exempt conditions to include single shots with 6" barrel and 10 1/2" overall length.
Could then easily get TC's etc.

This could conceivably allow some decent derringers in, then, without special approval. Just ship derringer w/a long *** single-shot 8+" barrel. After you buy it, drop on a regular twin-shot derringer bbl. It's terrible that we can only get Cobra Arms derringers in CA when there are Waco Arms, Bond Arms, etc.

This new law would also allow the new single shot EAA pistol with a 1911 lower, as well as Remington XP100s.

What we need to do is get IPSC shooting as an Olympic sport, all divisions, then all those pistols could be Olympic pistols!!!
