Looks to be a model 3. Grips are not going to be the only thing that needs to be replaced, main spring is also missing. They were discontinued around 1915.

They came in several different calibers, not many of them are in mass production these days. Before I did anything with it I'd have it gone over by a very competent gunsmith

Was it refinished? No chrome back then?

New model 3, nickel finish, .38 Winchester?

Just a guess. These guns go for 3-4K at auction, in 80% or better condition. The finish on yours looks great. Time to acquire a poor condition donor for parts.

          Edit: Correct model is below…

Judging solely by the front face of the cylinder being ahead of the forward lower pin in the frame (as .38) and the S&W monogram on the right side of the frame that earlier models did not have, I'm thinking .38-S&W Double Action 4th Model Revolver, 5-inch barrel, made from 1895 to 1909 - refinished at some point as the hammer, trigger-guard and trigger should be blued - (or are those in the white/finish gone?)

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

Not a new model 3; note the inward curvature of the trigger guard and pins in the frame under the cylinder on the 38 Double Action 4th model that the new model 3 doesn't have.

Trigger-guard on the new model 3 could be customer specified, no? There are examples with two-finger guards, floating around.

I agree and see your point on the trigger-guard pins.

That's not the only reason of note. Frames are entirely different, pin placement, top latch different, etc.

It's the .38-S&W Double Action 4th Model Revolver.
