Well, my AR15 is a RAW so I don't have to worry about a funky button or odd ball grip. (No offense intended or implied to the makers and users of these devices.) It was also a fed pre-ban so I have all the evil features on it.

    HOWEVER . . .

I built an FAL a few years back. I drilled & tapped & installed an allen screw in the original mag release so it would be a fixed mag (10 rounds of course). I had absolutely no desire to NOT have a pistol grip on the rifle. I felt/feel a bit cheated but at least I can own one here in Cali. Better than NOT having one!

I just finished (sort of anyway) an AK build today. I'm going out to the range in the morning to see how it does. It has the jumbo panda BB installed. I feel a bit cheated not being able to have a normal AK, but at least I can have a neutered AK here in Cali. Again, better than NOT having one!

Assuming you load via stripper clips (I gained that from the way you described how you "permanently" "fixed" your mag), you still don't have the ability to use your FAL at it's "Kaliforniastan" potential! Take that setscrew out of there (oh, I guess I'm supposed to say "AFTER removing all the "evil features"); PM jjperl and buy his FAL BulletButton shroud; buy as many 10-rd mags as you need........and have FUN!!!!!! (ALSO, if you happen to have any pre-ban 20-rounders, make 1 or 2 "10/20's" like I did with mine - then, it will even have the aesthetics of (and be as close to as "KALI-possible") a true FN-FAL.)

Funny you should mention this. I went to the range (5 Dogs north of Bakersfield) today & decided to take my FAL. I hadn't shot it in a while so I'd forgotten how much of a pain (finger gets blistered, misaligned cartridges) it is to load the mag through the ejection port (I don't have the stripper clip type cover, just a scope mount cover which has yet to have a scope mounted to it!). I decided at the range I'm going to check into a BB for the FAL. Back when I built it 6 or 7 years ago bullet buttons hadn't been invented yet so the method of the day was modifying the mag release.

I have only the one 10 round mag but I do have a bunch of 20 rounders. I may modify a couple of them or maybe I'll just buy a couple of more 10 rounders.
