Just leave your drivers license as is and don't use it for identification, it's simply a license to drive.
Go to DMV and get a REAL ID California Identification Card. It's does not require a test, is good for 6 years before renewal, and will not be suspended if you or DMV messes up your record because of tickets etc.

Unlike california most states do not try to make extra money off of you when you convert. And remember california was the instigator of this garbage way back when. We have our politicians to thank for it. the feds could not trust Jerry Brown and his Sanctuary state freebies including driver's licenses for non-citizens.

I just got my license renewed. I brought all my documentation to get the Real ID. License arrived on Friday and I received the WRONG one. Now I have to start from scratch again. I am calling the DMV today to see what I can do about it other than stand in a very long line or make another appointment a month away.

After two calls to the DMV and being told, sorry there was nothing they could do over the phone, I ventured back to the DMV this morning. I found someone who looked like they had some authority (instead of waiting in line) and told them my story. They had me refill out an application and sent me straight to a window with no wait. This time, the clerk photocopied all of my documentation as well as got a supervisor to sign off on it. I then needed to retake my photo also.

So I guess the moral of the story is make sure they both look at and photo copy the documentation, otherwise they might not be taking the time needed to give you the right kind of license. Hopefully I will have the new license in a week like before because they punched a hole in the new one I just received.

True. But many other states already have RealID compliant licenses; and/or do not have "non RealID" licenses out and about with "federal limits apply" language.

Also, the challenges in California around gun purchases appear to be with CA state law and CA DOJ's stance -- the relevant statute for gun purchase / delivery after DROS is a CDL or CA ID card. Having a passport and multiple other proofs of identity / age / residence is not sufficient under CA law, even if it would be under Fed law. The Feds (BATFE) have indicated that the "federal limits apply" licenses may be used in a transaction, but warn that licensees (FFLs) might be wise to ask for additional documentation proving citizenship / valid visa / other lawful residency requirements to purchase a firearm for purchasers using "fed limits apply" DLs issued prior to Jan 2018 in CA (see first post in thread linked below).

This appears to be another CA clusterfark / deliberate impediment to lawful activity involving icky guns.

(b) Unless unloaded and securely wrapped or unloaded and in a locked container.

(c) Unless the purchaser, transferee, or person being loaned the firearm presents

I haven't seen anything relating to CA DOJ's interpretation of why a "fed limits apply" license is not a "valid driver's license" under CA Penal Code 16400 -- except for "advice" and "guidance" to CA dealers that the "fed limits apply" is a no go. I would love to see the legal opinion that this guidance is based on -- because, from what I can see, there's not a basis to do so under CA law. At the same time, I am not surprised to see that many CA dealers will not run the risk of running afoul of CA DOJ's guidance on this front.

2 weeks ago I got my new driver's license and paid no attention to it, 2 days ago I went to get a new shotgun and because on the upper right corner is a ( Federal limits apply) I was told I can not buy a gun in CA. How about that S--t I have lived for 33 years. The Ca. DOJ is bouncing all license with that sticker. Going to DMV on Friday to try and get the right license.

Lots of posts on this been the law since jan . Go to dmv take your proof of residence sociial security card and birth certificate or passport. With fed limits license in 2020 you will not be able to pas tsas for travel.

If your license was issued before sometime earlier this year (February I think) they will still take the non "Real ID" license. Any license issued after that date must be "Real ID" type. No doubt there will be some LGS that do not fully understand the importance of the issue date.

BTW - a lot of this comes from those states that wanted citizenship verified ID for travel and voting.

When I went in to apply for my CDL Class A, they asked me If I wanted to get the Real ID License. I asked, what is that? They said it will allow me to board planes or some sht. I said sure, might as well while here. Who wants to make another trip to the DMV. I guess all the docs I had for my Class A covered what they needed for the Real ID.
