For general "surface coat" I use Breakfree CLP.

I spray it on, wipe it off, blow it out of the crevices with compressed air.

CLP has a volatile component so as that dries off, it leaves a very very thin layer. Not enough to get other things greasy, but enough of a film to protect against rust. No, if I lived on a houseboat in salt water, I would not consider this sufficient. But it's worked for me for 10+ years and I have no reason to think it will stop working any time soon.

Pistols I usually also put inside a ziplock bag to protect against getting scuffed in the safe, moving things around.

Frog Lube is awesome for the outside of a gun. My buddy Stevie-boy swears by it!

I live at the beach. There is nothing that will last "long term". I re-oil stuff ever 6 months here.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Cosmoline. It's excellent. Used by military.

I don't know about "long term" storage but I've found that in my fishing reels CorrosionX doesn't harden up and it stays where ya put it. They live in a much harsher environment than a gun safe.

For exterior a lot of guys like Rennaisance Wax. It's good enough for museums, and they should know about long term storage.

Just make sure you put it in a sock if you're gonna be storing it in a rug or especially in foam. Foam and blued finishes do not play well together.

                            Hoppe's gun oil.

But seriously... Grandpa's 1903 (made in 1917) had not been touched in decades.
It lived in Whittier from 1967 to 1986, then moved to Temecula for 20 years, then moved to Austin 10 years ago.
                            Austin gets quite humid.

It's fine. Dad says last time it was cleaned was at least 30 years ago, but 30 years ago I was still living with them and I was never aware that we owned it, so I'm thinking it's likely been 50 since it's been touched.
When mm gave it to me it was clean of powder/carbon... and was dry as a bone.

Should add, do not store a gun in a cloth case. The cloth draws humidity from the air and holds it against the gun. Many fine guns inherited by people who knew nothing about how to store them have been ruined this way. Cloth cases are for transport only, never storage.
