The Glock is the Toyota Camry of the gun world. They just work. Does that make them the best? No. I will shoot any type of handgun and own just about every type of handgun. I couldn't get into Glocks because of their lack or ergonomics, blockyness, and spongy triggers. I prefer an M&P or XD to a Glock.
I also didn't use to see the good in a 1911. They were expensive and had lower capacity magazines. It wasn't until I shot my friend's Colt 1911 that I started to see the appeal. The slide operated like butter and the ergonomics felt perfect to my hand. On top of that, the recoil of the 45acp felt amazing coming out of a metal gun. It was so easy to shoot. It was also more accurate than any pistol I had ever shot.
I still had never owned a Glock or a 1911 and was in the market for a 10mm. My budget limited my decision to a Glock 20/29 or a Rock Island Armory 1911. I went and looked at a Glock 20. It didn't feel good in my and and the barrel was not fully supported. I plan to use the gun as a woods gun with full power 10mm loads. The RIA 1911 on the other hand had a fully supported barrel and beautiful looks. For that reason alone, I went with the RIA. It was a bonus that it came with an amazing trigger.
Since then, I was having a problem with the gun jamming on full power loads. I sent the gun in for service and they put in heavier springs and polished the feed ramp all for free. The gun will now cycle any type of 10mm load with no issue. The Glock would have required a new barrel, heavier recoil spring, and a better trigger. Even with those upgrades, it would never look as beautiful as this..

I owned a G21 and didn't care for how it felt in my hand, large and kind of slippery so I sold it. Only interested in getting another G20/21 so I can do the 50GI conversion but have been leaning away from that as of late, so will probably never own another Glock.
I also don't like the feel of the XD's (the single-stack version might be better) but my Taurus PT145CA feels okay and so did a couple of my friends M&P's so it's not all plastic guns that i dislike.
Now 1911's on the other hand, feel right at home in my hand as long as they have the short GI trigger and I own three and also a Para Carry 9, LDA variant in 9mm.
I also liked (and regret selling) the Made-in-Canada, Para P13 I used to own. I owned the P13 at the same time as the G21 and though it was the same caliber/capacity, it was smaller in every dimension then the G21 and fit better in my hand.
All that being said I wouldn't feel under-gunned with pretty much any brand, though I would definitely NEVER buy a High Point pistol. I do own one of their carbines in .45 and like it for what it is.Comment
