    What would you do?

I will be traveling to California in a few days to visit family and friends in a short while. I have a rifle and some ammunition I would like to sell, the ammo is the "famous" green tip 5.56 and the rifle is a Marlin lever action mod. 1894 in .45 Colt I give it a 99% to like new condition. I want to do this 100% legal and above board so......is it legal to sell the ammo person to person? whats it worth? I don't want to sell for to much or to little. The rifle I assume has to go through a licensed dealer is that correct? any ideas what it would be worth? I'm thinking it would be at least $650.00 and could be more and just as with the ammo I don't want to try to get to much or to little, what say you? For me it's time to start to thin things out, maybe I should throw some brass in to maybe someone could use some .308 win or .300 Win mag brass or?

100% legal to sell 5.56x45mm M855 ammo in CA.
No CA FFL dealer needed. Transaction can legally be face-to-face or "mail ordered" (internet + mail).
Since BATFE is no longer trying to ban it, about $0.40-0.48 per round (what local gunstores are currently charging).

Firearm needs to be transferred through a CA FFL dealer.
No idea on the worth of your rifle.

Ditto on what Quiet said about the ammo. Seems like you're a little low on the rifle value just doing a quick scan of Gunbroker. Looks like like they typically fetch $750-$900. GLWS

Your title says "What would you do?"

I would stop at the border in Nevada and tell your family to come to Reno. I hate traveling into CA.

I honestly don't remember the transport rules for rifles but make sure you do so you don't end up running afoul.

        Good luck selling your stuff.

Given you can buy ZQi SS109 (no "green tip" painted on it) at Walmart for $10 for 30, I would say stick to around 40 cent on the high end for your M855. Of course, get what you want, get what you can, but knowing it can/does retail for 40 cent per round on the high end, 48 is high IMHO. Even more so since the M855/SS109 issue was dropped. And make sure the buyer is old enough to buy ammo of course.

Yes you can sell the ammo face to face. It's worth about $.35 - .$45 a round.
