I know it comes down to preference and the shooter but I have an Aimpoint PRO and I wanted to get some opinions on absolute or 1/3 co-witness. Let me know what you prefer and why.

Co-witness question

I do not like co-witness in general. It creates a very busy sight picture regardless of whether you are 1/3rd or Absolute. What I like is a low profile gas block with flip up sights...and those sights should be Absolute co-witnessed and used in the event that my optic goes down. Or if I'm training with them...in which case I will usually remove my T1.
If I had a fixed front sight, I would first work to replace it with flip ups."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

Are you talking about an Ar? Not assuming anything here. I have an absolute on my AR with FSB, no actual cowitness for me. Not for sighting, not for shooting. I can see the tip of front sight, but I don't focus on it. YMMV.Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!Comment

Yes on an AR. The reason I am asking is that as a primary I use my RDS but if it were to break or fail when using absolute I can just pop the rear and not have to adjust the way I'm firing. I guess I'm mainly thinking about the zero and not having to compensate for a failed RDS when using the rear. If that makes sense.Last edited by Bane_619; 02-23-2015, 5:11 PM.sigpicComment

Absolute with flip ups for me. If optics fail, I just pop the BUIS and get a perfect sight picture through the EOtech. I don't use irons on my scoped rifle since there are no batteries/electronics to fail.Originally posted by MezcalfudBecause a Glock looks great in the case and then when you take it home it feels like you're holding a Costco pack of Kielbasa.Comment

to get a 1/3 co-witness with a PRO you'd need to buy another riser. they are absolute from the factory.
the key to the situation is a flip-up rear sight.
a primary benefit of red dot sights is they are parallax free. if you can see the dot and put it on the target you will hit. so, cheek weld is less important. you can very easily get a sight picture that minimizes the front sight, while still having absolute co-witness. I can get a great sight picture with ounces of difference in cheek weld pressure.
remember the irons have their own zero.Last edited by 2761377; 02-24-2015, 4:54 PM.MAGAComment

1/3 is my preference.
Best of both worlds. Allows you to head float and use your no parallax optic as intended. And allows you to get down and use the 2 along side each other.
Absolute, not so much. Cuts your FOV in half IMO. I no like.Comment

My recent comments on this from another topic...
No doubt I prefer absolute coewitness.
I only use flip up BUIS so they are out of the way but I find I prefer that when I do flip them up they line up with my red dot. I no like lower 1/3 as it is disjointed to my eye. All of my AR weapons run absolute coewitness.
Also full cw allows another way to dial in your buis/irons once you get the red dot dialed in.10 +1 in the chamberComment

I'm not co-witness sensitive either way. I actually never co-witness my sights, either im running the red dot or the backups. Price & aesthetics dictate what height
mount I pick. All things being the same I guess my preference would be absolute.Comment

I run absolute with flip up sights. It helps me verify that my RDS is still zeroed before I start shooting. Additionally, with small RDS like the TRS-25 I find 1/3 co-witness to be difficult to deal with. The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.Comment

I run absolute with my A2 front and flip-up rear. Was shooting recently in the desert when after a few hours the battery suddenly died in my Sparc after the 2nd round of that mag. Flipped the rear sight, finished the mag then changed the battery. Was able to hit my target at 100 yds which gave me more confidence in that setup (plus knowing my irons were properly zeroed).Comment
