    Rem 1100 vs 11-87

Wondering if Calguns members can help me answer some questions. I'm looking for a nice skeet gas gun. Anyone know what the difference is between the Remington 1100 and the 11-87? Which one would be better suited for skeet and general shooting?

Which one stays cleaner and is reliable with light loads?

    Thanks!

The 11-87 is an updated version of the 1100, and many people consider it improved, but it's more expensive, in general. It's easier to switch between different loads with the 11-87, but some prefer the balance and handling of the 1100.

They both have a very good reputation, and I don't think you can go wrong with either.

There's a ton of discussion on this out in the newsgroup archives:

Most of my experience with the 1100's is (now) a lil' old. IIRC & somebody correct me if'n I'm wrong but the 1100's dont have removable chokes~ whatcha buy is whatcha get vs. the 11-87 with removable ones.................
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

I've got a new 1100 28ga with removable chokes. Luv it
Also got a 1187 12ga. Both excellent game guns.

IIRC 1100's are 2-3/4 chambers. 11-87's are 3 or 3-1/4 chambers. Matters if you're a duck hunter. Probably not to anyone else.

There's a very good reason Remington didn't discontinue the 1100 when they came out with the 11-87. The 1100 was a bit lighter than the 11-87 and points quicker which is it's biggest selling point. If you hunt more upland birds than waterfowl, and shoot some skeet a 12 guage 1100 with a 26" barrel makes for a sweet all around shotgun.

never heard of 3 1/4 inch round. You mean 3.5 inch round...?

"The 11-87 is basically an 1100 with a compensating gas system. It can expel excess gasses that would otherwise batter the gun when shooting 3" loads or heavy magnum 2 3/4" loads. The 1100 standard is not capable of expelling the gasses and will be battered if using heavy magnum loads, it is also chambered for 2 3/4" only."

I thought the newer 1100's also took 3"

The new 1100 G3 does, but I don't think the others do:
