Different between Remington & Mossberg

I am looking to buy an Home Defense shotgun, and have been looking between Remington and Mossberg. Which one is better and what are the difference between both shotgun. Thank you for your help.

pump releases are different. Safety location is different. not so sure about capacities, but i'm guessing they're different. go to a shop and hold both of them and ask the dude behind the counter what's different and what's the pros and cons.

IMO, i have 2 mossberg 500s set up differently and they are both great for home defense. they are cheaper than the remingtons.

The two main differences are safety location and pump release. Both are reliable and relatively cheap but mossberg has more configurations to choose from. Go hold both and whichever one strikes your fancy, buy it.

Mossberg tube is difficult to extend, barrel cap limits it

Mossberg receiver is aluminum, lighter

Rem is steel, heavier

Mossberg safety is on top, good for lefties and righties, harder to reach from a pistol grip

Rem870 safety is behind trigger guard, need to buy the lefty safety to reverse (cheap though $20)

Both are good, I have one moss500, one moss590, three rem870s

They're both quality choices. You can probably also rent both at a range near you. 5 minutes with each will likely give you better information than anything you're going to get here.

REM Vs. Mossberg

Like some have said, the safety locations are in different locations and the receivers are made of different materials. Personally I have had issues with the Mossberg 500 but that was many years ago. I believe the newer Mossbergs to be of much better quality than the older ones. It really does come down to which one you like better. I have read many posts concerning the quality of newly manufactured 870s and there seems to be some issues that need to be addressed with the chambers before they run right. On a personal level, I was out at the range with a couple of buddies from work and each had a newly purchased Rem 870 (2011) and they both locked up that day with federal ammo. It's nothing that can't be resolved but it is kind of disheartening to see a gun such as the remington 870 malfunction like this. If either of my buddies had to use their shotgun in a defensive situation without knowledge of this it could have been really bad. When I say these guns were "locked up" ...I mean LOCKED UP! It took major force to get these guns to cycle again. From what I've read, the chambers are tighter these days and some brands of ammo literally get stuck in the chamber. Although this absolutely shouldn't be happening, I wouldn't let this stop me from buying a Remington if I really wanted one because it is easily fixed by polishing the chamber.

One sucks, ones awesome. seriously though just the features vary. The mag extension is a moot arguement since not all mossys have the permanent end cap.

I find the safty on the moosbergs more "SAFE" for me personally. When I push the safty forward the gun goes boom, when back its safe. My 870 I had to look for the red everytime I clicked it over between left and right. Probly my fault since I'm dislexic an mix everything up. Its tough to **** up on the mossy safty, but harder to reach if yer running a pistol grip. They both good guns!

All personal preference, and there are Mossbergs that do allow for tube extension, some 500 models come with the 5 round tube that can be extended. The 590a1 6 shot magazine tube can be extended.

All in all it comes down to personal preference.

The Mossberg 500 combo package from big 5 is probably the best deal in a quality shotgun for use in both HD and fun shooting some clays with your buddies. The pump feels sloppy though in comparison to the Remington. The Remington being heavier does feel more solid. My friend has a Remington and I have the Mossberg 500, and I'd be happy with either really.
