I'm amazed that people are naive enough to use birdshot for HD, guess a lot of people never took a Physics class and have never shot ballistics gel? I've shot a Coyote at close range with birdshot and even on something that just weighs 30-40lbs, it took multiple shots to dispatch the critter.

Birdshot creates a nasty looking, but very shallow wound, that's hardly incapacitating. If the perp is wearing a thick leather jacket you might not get any penetration.
Buckshot is the only suitable defensive choice.
Don't get me started on the idiots who are armchair warriors and have decided to stagger and alternate the rounds with buck and bird. I stagger bird with rock salt
the salt really makes the flesh wound sting.

Loading a shot gun with birdshot indoors is dumb, there are no birds or clays inside. He would have been better off with a 10/22 and quickly shoot the perp with 3-5 rounds._______________
