    The problem is that it is a Mossberg! Sorry, with all of the Reminton 870 bashing by Mossberg fans I just couldn't resist.

    The screw may be coming loose from the safety;
    - Is there much up and down movement on the Safety Button?

    The breech bolt may be engaging the safety button, hold forward on the safety while firing. This is not a cure, just a test to help diagnose.

    i also got a mossberg 500 as myfirst gun and about 90% of the ammo i shoot is Winchester Super X and i never had any problems with it. matter of fact i have not had a single problem with my mossberg 500. on my friends 930 the action doesent close all the way and it put a dent on the primer but doesnt fire. u might wanna check that out.

    Winchester Super X is what I've been shooting lately but I've used a variety of rounds, I'm pretty skeptical ammo is the problem.

    I wouldnt say I was happy with the fact that the gun misfired one out of twenty five rounds but seeing as I couldnt identify the problem it was just something I put up with.

    Can you switch ammo? Winchester Super X doesn't have a very good reputation, and maybe you got a bad batch.

    I'm amazed that you're fine with 1 out of 25 shots being bad. I would consider that a malfunctioning gun.

    Interestingly enough my buddy just left for the Marine corps and left me with his almost new Mossberg which is exactly the same model, good thinking.

    Can you compare the length of the firing pin with a new one? Maybe prematurely worn down, and not hitting the primer hard enough?

    My 2 pennies!

    Mossberg 500 problem

    I bought a Mossberg 500 last march as my first shotgun. It's pretty much bone stock. 5 shot magazine, came with 18" cylinder bore and 28" full choke barrels.

    Anyways I've run maybe five or six hundred rounds of number seven and eight birdshot shooting skeet and about forty rounds of buckshot through the thing , plus it was dropped on grass once.

    I clean it fairly regularly but there is a problem, last time I went skeet shooting it was failing to fire on about three quarters of the shots, the firing pin was dropping and putting a little dent in the primer but still wasnt firing. It has done this occasionally since I got it but usually maybe only 1 out of 25 shots. And Ammunition is not the problem, I generally shoot winchester super x shells.

    I disassembled it yesterday and the firing pin diddnt seem stick and the hammer was dropping ok.
    Anyone have any idea whats going on?
