    Mossberg 500a accessory problem

I just recieve a mossberg 500a from my uncle after waiting for 11 day for the transfer at big5 sporting good. I believe the shotgun is more then 10 year old.

Problem that I have encounter with the shotgun is that it don't have pre drill hole for a rail that i going put a red dot on.

Also encounter that a ATI 6 pos. stock will not work if i use the stock bolt. I need to get a shorter one.

I would like to know if anyone have encounter problem when puting on aftermarket accessory for the shotgun??

Will I cause any damage if i drill my own hold for the rail??

Any suggest and comment about the Mosssberg 500a be great. Also picture of your 500A be great too.

Basicly most of the accessory is only for look.

    Thanks for your time

On the drilled holes for the receiver, that particular generation of 500's must not have been drilled/tapped at the factory. On current Mossbergs, this is a standard feature. Oh well, no big deal. Take it to a gunsmith. I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you have a drill press and are totally familiar with the process and know exactly what you're doing. You really could very easily screw it up if you improperly drill (not perfectly straight), end up drilling too deep or even through the receiver, or don't tap the holes with the right size threading.

On the stock, I'm not totally able to mentally picture your problem. The stock bolt piece, if we're not confusing it for the barrel screw, should have a 5/16" head and be, I believe, 1". Check yours and see what you're working with. A photo of the problem would be a great help. If you're still having problems after you've reasoned everything out there's always a squirrely fix to be thought up (I'm already thinking of a couple) or a gunsmith to go to.

I know some company made this scope rail that replaced the pins onthe receiver with longer bolts that took place of the pins and you could mount a rail for a scope. Not sure what the company was . i had one. Worked ok

I would't bother with the red dot, ( battery's, on/off switch-too many things to fail) and the M4 type stock on a Moss 500 makes it a little hard to reach the safety. I would go with a traditional type stock like a Hogue 12" LOP, and a TLR-1 light. JMO

Thanks for all of your response. I figure out the problem with the stock. As for the hole, Can someone post a picture of their reciever with the pre-drilled hole??

            Here's my 500.

As you can see it's four holes on a flattened basin. It's neater in overall appearance to just slap a rail onto a drilled and tapped receiver, and is probably more stable, but other options exist.

What was the problem with the stock, anyways?

ATI stock comes with shorter screw you will need to install on 500. Look in your bag, it should be there.

FWIW, I've seen some ATI stock kits come without all the pieces. Have one such in a box in the garage now. Came without the Mossberg pieces.

Been thinking of putting it on the pay it forward thread for free.

Yes, certainly. Most aftermarket accessories require a fair bit of "massaging" to make them work as advertised.

I have a Mesa Tactical "Sideshell" carrier on mine, and it's held in place with two screws. One screw replaces the pin that holds the trigger assembly in place. After shooting about 100 rounds of trap one day (at the time it was my only shotgun) the recoil force knocked around the Sideshell so much that its screw in the trigger assembly beat up the receiver. The damage was bad enough that the gun would not have been able to be fired. I was able to repair it by reaming the hole to 0.250" and machining a new cross pin, and modifying the Sideshell so it clung more firmly to the receiver. But that aftermarket accessory almost cost me an entire shotgun. So be careful.

The ATI stock didnt come with the shorter screw for mossberg. I might go to Lowes and look for a screw for it.

It was not tight to the receiver. If you tighten the screw enough to make the Sideshell "stick," it crushes the receiver enough to freeze the action bars. The new cross pin I machined is like the stock pin (held in place with the original spring detents) and it has a lengthened shank where it holds the Sideshell.

I don't have a Tacstar Side Saddle but I imagine the installation issues are similar. Just be careful with the cross screw thing, it's a really bad solution. I used some self-adhesive rubber sheet purchased from McMaster to help mine get additional grip on the receiver. (Cut roughly to shape, stick to mating surface of Sidesaddle, neatly trim with razor, looks and works great.)

I fixed all the problem. As for the tacstar side saddle, My reciever don't come with pre drill hole so, insead of drilling hole, I used some 3m double sided tape and put it on/

The TacStar side saddle mounts to the trigger pin hole. You punch the pin out and replace it with the mounting hardware for the side saddle.
