    Mossberg 550CD problems....

    Hi folks,

A friend here has a 550CD Western Field version of the Mossberg 500 in .20 gauge. Couple of problems with it. First the slide release [part number 57 in most Mossberg 500 schematics described as 'Action Release Lever'] is very short, only sticking down hardly 1/4" below receiver behind trigger guard. It's a real pain to work the action with it as short as it is, much more so with a pistol grip as part of the butt stock. Anybody know if there's an extended action release lever available that hangs down lower?

Also the gun doesn't cycle properly in that you have to push up that lever each time you rack the slide. Follow up shots are hopeless. Is that normal for this gun's action, to have to push that lever to work slide for each shot?

One last question. The gun's aluminum receiver is a dark brown color, rest of the gun component are more like black. Any suggestions for a good refinishing treatment to color it all black? Nothing fancy, cheap is the key word, and DIY.

    Thanks for any help!
