Best Huntin' shotgun for under $400

My credit card is still recovering from an accute case of BRD (Black rifle disease) and I've only got $400 to spend on a huntin' shotgun including DROS. What guns should I be looking at?

    Either a mossberg 500 or a Rem 870 wingmaster.....

      +1 I like the 870 wingmaster myself.

In my above post I said both the mossy500 and the 870.. I would take the 870's steel receiver over the Mossy's aluminum receiver...slightly less felt recoil.... as far as strength... both are fine.. I have several thousand rounds of trap and skeet loads through my mossy and it's 21yrs old and is shows verry little wear.. I did how ever shot a 3" magnum one throught it.. ONLY once.. boy!!! talk about a shoulder bruiser!!!!!

Mossbergs are made poorly in my opinion. I would go with a Remington 870. Also, I haven't shot one, so I can't recomend it, but I have heard good things about the Benelli Nova.

Should be able to find an excellent used 1100 in that price range

Either a Moss 500 or a Remington 870. I shot them both. Both are about the same. i really think its a matter of preference more than anything else. The 870 I shot seemed sort of cheap but the Mossy 500 with the plastic stock is the ultimate cheezy construction. I swapped out to wood stock and foregrip and it feels abotu 100X better

+1 for the 1100 & low mileage used ones should be well within your price range. I'd consider an Ithaca M37 before a Mossberg or 870 any day of the week...not a smoother pump made. Extremely easy to load/reload when the birds are flying hot.

Now that we're talking used guns I'd also recomend the Ithaca over the Remington and the Mossberg. It's my dads all time favorite shotgun, and they can be found for pretty cheap. Even better in my opinion is the Browning BPS (it's what I shoot), which can be had used for under $400.

After a pretty convincing conversation with a friend on mine I opted to spend a little bit extra coin and purchased a Benelli Supernova 26 inch gun in Max 4 HD camo. Awesome gun...

I have a Benelli Nova and it has been flawless. Recoil isn't too bad and it's the smoothest pump I have ever used. I paid $360 for it.

Any shotgun with a long barrel that way you get that little extra accuracy. Hell... you could hunt with a double barrel. When it comes to hunting.... it doesn't really matter what gun you use.... as long as it shoots and is an appriopriate caliber for the target critter.

2 3/4" is fine for shotgun hunting. You don't really need 3" but the majority come with the ability to shoot both calibers.

What does "you could hunt with a double barrel" mean? Double barrels are quick pointers, no extra length from the receiver, less prone to breaking(less parts. Generally stronger. Might not be as 'cool' to look at, but work great in the field. My regular hunting shotgun is a Browning B\SS (SxS). Doubles have been around for a long time for a reason and I would suggest that anyone that enjoys shotgunning should spend a couple of bucks more and get a decent one.

I own a double barrel also... but in my experience. Double barrels are USUALLY shorter barrels and tend to really scatter the buckshot. Be great for bird, but for larger game. I'd be careful with the big game shot or #2 shots.
