I've heard several people who have had the wooden dowel in the tube, in fact my old Mossberg 20 gauge had one, but my 500 Persuader 8 shot never had one, so I'm not sure whether or not it is a California thing.

I wound up getting the Mossberg 500a for the house. Because it stays at home, for the savings over the others I used the difference to get an adjustable/compensating Knoxx stock so it fits my wife also without beating her up too bad. 7+1 should be plenty living in town with neighbors all around to call 911 if she can't dial out before throwing lead down the hall. If 7 aren't enough (7 in the tube, empty chamber, pin dry fired - rack and fire), you can always reload off the shells on the stock.

If I could have found a used Winchester 1200 or 1300 when I was looking, that would have been where my money went.

the wooden dowel is a hunting thing. 2 shell limit

I bought the 500a for $249.99 at Big 5 earlier this evening. Seemed like the best deal, and I can put the handle or stock of my choice on it for the difference.

^ by handle I assume you mean the forend... and the unforunate answer is to put a new/better forend on it you will need to spend about an additional $45 plus shipping BEFORE the cost of a new forend to get the right setup... search the forums for plenty of discussions on it.

I think its time to take the old persuader to the range again.

Anyone interested in a meet at Insight in Artesia within the next week or two?
