So about 6-7 years ago my dads old Remington Model 12 (.22lr) broke. We took it to a few guns smiths since I did not have the experience with guns back then that I do now. The first guy had it for about a year and did nothing more than drill a hole through the carrier
ruining it. We decided to pick it up and take it elsewhere. Took it to a second guy who had it for about 2 years and never touched it.
This rifle has sentimental value to my dad otherwise I would have just turned it in at a gun buy back and used the money to get him another Marlin 60 or something.
So the rifle had been sitting around until this winter when I finally had spare time to do to research, order parts and get this thing running again. Lots of hit and miss but I finally gathered the right parts. Some perfectly good parts had either been ruined or lost through out the years. I picked up a new carrier that had been ruined, firing pin, cartridge retainer that had been lost in the process and a few other springs and pins.
After doing research I found out that the only part that initially had to be replaced was the broken firing pin
but the "experts" I had taken it to had either ruined parts or lost parts.
I now have all the right replacement parts, none are missing and I am now down to the last issue. I have the correct cartridge retainer but it needs to be filed because the action is very hard and I can feel the pump mechanism rubbing against the cartridge retainer and receiver. This part needs some fitting. This is a 100 year old gun so some of these parts don't simply drop in like Glock parts.
This is the cartridge retainer:

Any idea where I need to file? I don't want to screw up and have to order another one cartridge retainer, they are $25-$30. On parts we have already spent close to what a cheap new .22lr rifle would cost.
Anyone have experience with these rifles or know of a forum where people that know a lot about these rifles hang out? is there a forum out there for .22lr fans?
I'd like to get this project done before work speeds up again.
Thanks.
