    Quality bolt action

Wanting to get a high quality bolt action .22LR for my son to use at Appleseeds and for general rabge work. He's about old enough to give it a try. He has a 10/22 for fun but I'd like to get a very accurate bolt gun with peep sights that we can both shoot.

I'm comfortable with up to $500, maybe a bit more, including the sights.

I've seen photos of a CZ and Savage. I had a Savage bolt rifle and really like the Accutrigger but am not set on it.

    What are some good options?

      Try a CZ 452.

        Bolt Action at Apple seeds?

You might want to talk to the Appleseeds People on here first.

        Seen people try it....never succeed

It is a timed shooting event

For under $500 you can't find better quality and accuracy than a CZ. As far as appleseed, I have no idea.

            From the Project Appleseed website:

Appleseed is content-free, so in regards to sights: you can use any. Rifles? Well, you can use any safe firearm which can be accurately shot from the shoulder, from a .22 to a .32 (8mm). We're semi-auto and bolt-gun friendly. The important thing is that it works, so before you come to a shoot make sure you clean it, break it in (if need be), and lube it properly in preparation for the day. Due to the high cost of ammo, we recommend using a .22 for the training on Saturday and if the range you are shooting at has a long distance range, then bring your center fire rifle for that on Sunday.

            +1 for CZ

Our course of fire was derived from the Army Qualification Test for the M1903 Springfield.

To the OP, shooting a bolt-action at Appleseed is a slight disadvantage -- but not because of speed. Instead it makes it harder for the shooter to maintain a good group size because you have to break position after every shot. This will reveal problems with NPOA much more quickly than a semi-auto. However, if a boltie is your thing, do it and don't worry. It can be done. Highest AQT I've seen out of a bolt-action yet is a mere 232 / 250.

You have many options. On a tight budget I'd probably get a Marlin 925 and a nice scope. For $500 total, Savage Mk II in your choice of stock and Tech Sights (irons) or a halfway decent scope. $500 for the rifle alone, CZ 452 / 455.

In your shoes last year I bought a CZ 452 Varmint and Weaver K4. Pretty sure I can get into the mid-240's on an AQT with it, if I ever get time to shoot.

                Sigh....

Our goal is marksmanship, not time or winning.

No scope. No semi auto. Just a bolt gun and iron sights.

For your purpose you will not do better than a CZ 452 Trainer. They come with really good iron sights and if you want better you can upgrade to BRNO Target Aperture sights for a tad more than $100. They are great sights, much better than Tech Sights or Williams aperture sights for target work however not too good for hunting if you decide to get into that.

A used Anschutz 64 can be had for $700-$800 bucks or less depending on the condition.

No disrespect to rocket man, but a child trying to use a bolt gun at Appleseed will have a bad time early in his shooting career.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

A Ruger American 22lr might be good since you already have 10/22. You could use same magazines in both.

Just trying to understand this point better. Like most kids, I started about age 9 with a single shot bolt .22lr and just loved it.

I'm familiar with Appleseed from reading their website and seeing the event profiled on Shooting Gallery TV show.

However, I've never shot Appleseed myself and I'm trying to understand why a bolt 22lr is a poor choice for kids at this event.

                          Thanks!

This is a very good question. I haven't been to an Appleseed either, but if a bolt action is a poor choice for kids. I think Appleseed might have something wrong with it.
