The "overcleaning" is a myth. I see friends that do NOT clean their .22's mess with them while I shoot & smile. Depending how you shoot & what your trying to accomplish, clean your chamber & action, in no particular order. Many competition shooters don't clean the bore regularly, but most of us should. Any change in the way the action feels means the gun should be cleaned.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Most of us should avoid using any type of rod to clean our barrels to avoid damaging the crown of the muzzle. I shoot 10,000-20,000 rounds every year and only use a "pull thru" type of cleaning system. The two that I prefer are the "patch worm" and the "Otis". CLP on the action of a semi-auto and very lightly lubed.

When to clean? Lots of opinions on that, some like to keep their rifle pristine between shooting sessions, some clean after each outing, some when the accuracy falls off, some do it once every 10 years. I clean my barrels after 1000 rounds, semi-auto action gets cleaned when I see crud forming.
