21 sharp is certainly technically more advanced than 22 lr. So is every other rimfire round in production. What I like about 22 lr (low velocity and noise) makes it a horrid round for lead free. In order to make a better lead free round it needs to be substantially faster and get rid of the heel. 17 hmr, 22 mag, 17 Mach 2, 17 wsm already do this. If 17 hmr (which I also like) was the same price as 22, I’d still shoot a lot more 22. Winchester can’t overcome physics.
Is it easier to retrofit a rifle to 21 sharp? Sure. Does that matter? Not much. If 21 sharp magical replaced 22 lr in popularity tomorrow the new 21 sharps rifles would be at a similar price point to 22 lr rifles. I’d just go buy a ruger 10/21. Would be about the same price as an aftermarket barrel. Hell most of the 10/22 barrels I’ve bought cost more than the 10/22 I put them on.
At 25 yards the cci lead free is reasonably accurate for something like squirrel or rabbit in my guns. I have a lifetime supply for hunting purposes. Anything farther and/or bigger I’ll use a 17 hmr or a 22 hornet. 22 lr lead free is still hot garbage, but it’s enough if you use it within its limitations. Just don’t expect it to be something it’s not.
