    Kids don't like single-shot anymore

So, my kids don't want to shoot my Marlin Little Buckaroo anymore. They like to shoot the 10/22. They're 12 years old. So, I don't know if I should keep it, put a scope on it, and try to get them interested in it that way, or just sell it. What would you do?

I notice this too. My 10 Y/O (raised on Battlefield 1942 and other FP Shooters) fired my single shot boys rifle and said "yep, great - hand me the GSG5"

How can you keep'em down on the farm after they've seen the big city.

I find that teaching new shooters (young and old), a lightweight semi-auto 22 works best---all the while keeping safety FIRST---a semi-auto allows the shooter to concentrate on their hold, stance, sight picture and trigger without having to work the action. Its important that they start hiting something soon to keep their interest up (like clay birds on a berm at say 30 yards). I use my old Remington Nylon 66 for teaching---a super reliable rifle that shoots right to point of aim and is very lightweight because many new shooters are young girls and small boys. You might consider donating the little Marlin to your nearest Boy Scout group.

So? I personally find all semi autos to be more fun to shoot, even shotguns. Its a matter of opinion. Try to sell single shot unless u want to keep it for yourself.

I would hold onto that little rifle

My bro said to have them shoot the single-shot iron sights for the first 1/2 hour going over fundamentals, and then let them plink with other guns after that. Repeat until they've developed some skill. then sell it, scope it, whatever. I think that's wise.

keep it.. my stepdad sat me down around age 5 with a singleshot that he had from when he was a kid.. i put thousands of rounds through it but never touched it again once he let me get my hands on the pump .22... almost 30 years later i found out its still sitting in the back of his safe and i am thrilled that its still around and will someday be a part of my collection.. the thought of selling it does not exist its one of those things you hang on to just because...

I have a Stevens Favorite that was my wife's dads gun. When we first got it, I wasn't too thrilled - I mean it was a single shot .22. However, I now appreciate how accurate it is, and it's pretty fun to shoot. Sometimes we'll have shooting competitions with single shots per competitor, and this rifle works great for that. It's also excellent for teaching new shooters.

Tell 'em how when you were their age you used to gather firewood at 5AM for the wood burning kitchen stove, and after you ate plain Quaker Oatmeal you'd hoof it to school through 5 miles of snow - and they'll leave the room and get back to the X-Box ;-)

SS 22lr is best for safety until they get rid of the "buck fever."
If/when they want a shotgun, buy a SxS Shotgun w/ automatic safety.

I'm looking for a Chipmunk/Cricket (or the like) for my boy who turns 6 this fall. If any of you LA area guys with older kids are looking to upgrade, let me know.
