    Tube Fed or Magazine Fed?

I'm coming up on my next purchase, and am leaning heavily towards a bolt action 22LR. While looking at the Marlin web site, I saw that they've got both tube fed and magazine fed rifles, and wondered if folks would be willing to share pros & cons with me.

From what I've read, the tube fed guns will go up to 15 (ish) rounds in the tube. The downside appears to be that since there's only one tube, you can't take advantage of the quick swap that multiple magazines offer.

On the other hand, magazines are limited to 10 rounds, meaning that you swap out magazines more often than you reload the tube.

Are there other things I should consider?

i have a marlin 80 it uses magazines i keep a mag of snake shot
for snakes and rats and a mag of solids for other things

its easy to swap but my situation is unique and rare

i also have a remington pump and its pretty quick to load with the spee-d loader

If your going for any kind of personal defense or varmint hunting, go with the magazine. The moment you load the second magazine, the tube fed really has no advantage.

Time = magazine change < Tube refill.

Remember, that extra 5 rounds is about a second or less of shooting.(in a .22)

If your going to use the gun as just a range gun, flip a coin. As long as you dont care about the extra reloading time...

        If autoloader, go Marlin 60

If Bolt, go Savage mag fed bolt action

Oh, and I have a tube fed Marlin 60 and a Mag fed Marlin 795 and love them equally. The model 60 will outshoot my 795 all day for one reason or another, but they both are a blast to shoot for cheap. My next rimfire will be a Savage .17hmr bull barrel.

Tube fed and mag fed .22's both have their pros and cons. I guess my only concern with the tube feeder is if I submit the gun to some hard use and accidently dent the tube, I may be temporarily out of the game. With a detachable mag, I can have a bunch of them in the event one goes bad on me.

I got tired of my semi-auto .22 rifles getting so gunked up that I decided to get a pump/bolt with a tube magazine. You can buy those speed loaders so while at the range or in the woods you can reload a little faster.

If you REALLY think you're going to need fast reloads, get the magazine version.

I have a Model 795 and I have a tendency to misplace those little magazines. Now I just take one when I go to the range. kinda wished I got the Model 60 instead.

Since you are looking at a bolt action I would definitely go with the tubular magazine. The tube will give you more capacity than the mags for a bolt, you will be able to shoot Shorts and Longs in addition to Long Rifle ammunition. Also, with no magazine protruding from the underside forward hand placement can be more varied.

I'm a big fan of tubular magazines. I like not having to worry about feed lips wearing out or losing detachable magazines (or forgetting them at home).

Although I'm sure it could happen, I don't know anyone thats ever dented up their tube to the point it still didnt work...the inner mag tube provides support for the outer tube.

                          I love my Marlin 795

35 pages over 2 years can't be wrong

But since you want a bolt gun I would look into the new XT-22s

On a bolt gun - tube magazine. You get the biggest capacity plus the ability to shoot something other than LR (like Colibris).

Went to an Appleseed. I had my tube fed Remington and my wife had her Marlin 795.

I am going to sell the Remington and buy 2 more 795s. 1 for me and 1 so that we can take a friend next time.

Anyone want a Remington tube fed autoloader?

                              .
