Cleaning the barrel on a Ruger 10/22

So I've been reading all over the internet about the different methods of cleaning a 10/22 barrel. People have mentioned bore guides, muzzle guides, drilling a hole in the back of the receiver, etc. I wanted to get your opinions on this. What do you guys think is the best way of cleaning the barrel with a cleaning rod without removing the barrel from the receiver?

    Thanks.

Use a patch worm, an Otis cleaning kit, or bore snake

I use a patch worm with felt buttons, and after a few thousand rounds will pull a brush through with my Otis kit

My honest opinion. I don't clean mine till I see accuracy starting to go down. Then I just use a bore snake.

Thanks for the advice guys but I was wondering of ways to clean the barrel without a bore snake. Preferably with a cleaning rod only. Would it be ok if I got a Dewey muzzle guide and cleaned the bore through the muzzle end?

Use an otis cleaning kit or a patch worm if you don't want to use a bore snake. You got two other suggestions.

Bore snake is all I use, after a brick or so.

Without removing the action from the stock or using a BoreSnake, from the front with a rod is the only way. A bore guide/muzzle protector is very desirable. A 1-piece rod rod with a rotating handle is recommended.

While a bore guide helps, you can use a rod without a bore guide, but make sure it's not steel (you want something softer than steel, or at least coated with something softer). Then, put a rubber washer (e.g., cone type) on the rod tight against the handle, to protect against inadvertent "banging" of the handle against the muzzle (this is a good idea in general for rods, particularly when working with a removed barrel where the action is not present).

Why dont you want to use a bore snake? They are awesome! I dont clean mine very often though, I notice a drop in accuracy when I do.

I LOVE my patchworm.... by far the best small investment I've made in firearms yet. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they're not insanely popular. I use them for everything except scrubbing, which is when the boresnake comes out.
