Dedicated AR15 22LR Upper

Hey CalGunners,

I want to build a dedicated 22LR upper and have a question I hope you can help me with.

I plan on purchasing this barrel and bolt group kit. Besides the upper and handguard, are there any other parts/hardware that I'll need to assemble the upper?

If the Handguard has its own barrel nut system. And you are not going to run a Barrel mounted FSB front sight..You should be good there. If you are going to run a optic or red dot on the upper receiver, of course you will not need a FSB. Are you running a railed Handguard? If so a front sight can still mounted to the top rail.. Or you can put a little front railed fake gas block at the front. The options with these is almost never ending,LOL

If you are going to run something like standard A4 plastic hand guards or Magpuls you will need a delta assembly for those type of Hand guards,.


Looks like you will need a flash hider and charging handle too?

Some run a dedicated 22 upper Charging Handle..I have never found it necessary to do so..I just run a cheap standard one on mine and it is fine. Show a pic of what you put together and post it. I like the AR22s.

The bill runs up pretty fast for these..I know.

You would reuse the barrel nut with your existing handguard.
The A2 forward assist can't be used. My CMMG upper has a fake plastic plug that looks like a forward assist.
If you look at the pic below of my 3 dedicated 22AR uppers you can see difference from a centerfire upper in the ejection port design.

Why not order a complete upper for a $200 more and keep or sell the 223?

You should have everything you need. The Forward assist means nothing..Just leave it in place..It has no affect on function..No need to remove it, nor put a plug in it..CMMG does make a FA device that sits on the back of bolt to have full function FA..But it was a stupid idea,LOL

The hand guard has its own barrel nut so you do not need a Delta assembly. Just remove your old barrel and Delta assembly and swap in the new Barrel and hand guard with nut, and you are in business.

I used a CMMG made $99 barrel and a $39 Anderson lightweight upper, no forward assist or dust cover.

Works great.
