    starter?

so after looking at some of these rifles i want one. what would be a good starter rifle i would be able to build on? something i could change the parts on as i go. and which rimfire caliber should i go with, i am not too familiar with the differences. 17 hmr or mach 2 or one of the 22's? i kinda like the 17 hmr i think its just the look of the round.

A Ruger 10/22 .22lr is going to be the most versitile as far as your described needs go.

http://www.rimfirecentral.com has references to just about anything that can be done to these.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Go with the Ruger. You'll end up buying one eventually. Maybe more than one. They are a time proven platform you can build on until you go broke. Or you can leave it stock like so many thousands before you and have a great little carbine.

I've got three 10/22's, and although I don't shoot any of them very much, I'm glad I have them.

Buy the cheapest Ruger 10/22 you can find. After you're done modifying it you will have a pile of parts similar to that cheap 10/22. The design is very modular and there is a TON of aftermarket for it.

If you plan on modding, which you probably will, just find the cheapest deal you can get.

It won't matter as you will most likely replace everything but the receiver by the time your done. After you have owned and rebuilt one, then for your second one you will have better ideas what to get.

Go with the cheapest one you can buy. Find something on sale. The base model is a great starter. I bought mine used and am glad I did. As everyone else has said, I replaced just about everything on it and it's a great tack driver. The squirrels hate it.
