Upgrade a surefire 9v Foreend light to led?

I bought an old style dedicated Forend for my Bennelli M1s90 in about 1991, it's got a built in pressure switch and no on off master switch like they have now.

I upgraded the light to a 9v, it simply threads into the Forend instead of the 6v version. It takes the three battery soldered 123s, and I understand these are no longer made, but it's the same to use three batteries.

Anyway, I remember people upgrading older sure fires to Cree and other led bulbs. My bulb still works but I might as well upgrade it.

Can this be done, and what would i use?

    Thanks.

Check lighthound.com for upgrades, I usually check there first. And candlepowerforums.

I think Sure Fire makes an upgrade. I don't think with a shotgun mounted light I would go with an aftermarket led upgrade bulb assembly, it may not stand up to the recoil shock as well, as the Sure Fire light.

My experience with the old fore-end lights using individual batteries is terrible. In one training class I blew through three bulbs. They used to have a whole technical spiel on the advantages to the battery sticks and how they improved reliability. I never had a problem with the light until I tried using individual batteries. The bottom line is I feel screwed by Surefire since they quite making the lights after selling lights that depend on the battery sticks to be reliable.

Here is a conversion head for those lights:

Yes, I recall the sales pitch to justify three batteries soldered together and covered in a shrink wrapper being way more than 3x a single battery cost.

          What was your solution?

When I spoke with Surefire, they left me hanging. Offered no solution. I keep thinking about a new light or going with the conversion kit. But I have lost confidence that I can count on the old design. Further, for the price of a conversion kit, I am well on the way to a new light.

After getting hung out to dry, I am thinking about going with something other than a Surefire solution.
