    Stag15 optics selection

I have a Stag15 Model 3 flattop. I have narrowed down my scope selection to:

    Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8x36mm MR/T M1 with TMR reticle
Nightforce 2.5x10x24 NXS NP-R2 or Mildot reticle
    ACOG 4x32 TA31RCO-M4

I will be using this primarily for target shooting. 100 yards now but 200+ in the future. I was told by Leupold today all there Mark 4 series utilize the Diamond coating and the scopes are made in the US. (They may buy materials outside the us, but the scopes are made here), ACOG is definitely made here but I have read Nightforce Optics are made in Japan. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I want to support US manufacturing when possible.

All three are good optics, but for shooting 200m and below, they seem a bit overkill. The MR/T is a great scope (probably the best one they've made since the Mark4), especially considering Leupold has been problematic the last five years or so. I've got a 2.5-10x NXS on my SPR build and it's a good fit out to 500m. That particular model ACOG should be a good fit too and would be the most compact.

Which reticle are you using for the NF? I'm leaning towards the NP-R2. It may seam overkill, but I'm looking to buy one scope for my stag and willing to spend a little extra to get the best value/quality. From what I've been reading the optical quality on the NF is superior to the Leup. I like the ACOG but do like the fact the Trijicon lamp needs to be replaced in 15 year. I also think the NF would be more accurate at distance than the ACOG. Do I also need to wait for FFP? It it important for the range of this firearm?

      Thanks

Agreed. All great options but you don't have to spend that much. If you are willing to then go ahead, any of them will work great and last a long time. Personally I like the TMR. Also the M4 has a larger objective, but at 200 and beyond the extra magnification on the NF will make a difference. I recently discovered IOR and haven't turned back, but thats not US made. There is also US Optics, but thats gonna be even more expensive.

The ACOG is a totally different deal than the other two scopes you're considering. It would be a nice optic for a Stag Model 3, but costs more than the rifle does. It's also not really a precision-shooting kind of optic. (However, the Stag flat top carbine isn't a precision-shooting kind of rifle, either.) The ACOG is designed for quick target acquisition and center-mass hits on human-sized targets from across the street to across the field. It's got the ranging reticle and bullet drop marks out to 800 meters for that specific purpose. If you're looking for x-ring precision on paper targets, go with one of the other two scopes. If you want to be able to engage human sized targets quickly and get center mass hits, go with the ACOG.

Thanks for all your inputs. I did call Nightforce and they told me the scopes are made in the usa but they get glass from Japan. They have no plans for an FFP verion (2.5x10x24) at this time. I'm leaning towards the NF! They have a zero stop.

I finally decided to purchase the Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5x16x42 Mildot. The decision was not easy. My first choice was the NF 2.5x10x24 but at this time couldn’t justify the cost. My 2nd choice was the ACOG TA31F but for the type of shooting I am doing (target) this was not the right fit. Leupold Mark4 was my 3rd choice buy none of the scopes I looked at have “Made in USA. ” (My old Leupold VX1 has it . ) For the price, if I’m spending over a grand, I expect USA made, USA quality!!

So this lead me down the road of what optics can I buy for under a grand and made in Japan? My choices were the Nikon Monarch series or Bushnell Elite. I went with the Elite because of the Bushnell Elite Bullet-Proof Warranty. If I not happy for any reason, they will refund my purchase. The new 6500 has a wide magnification rage of 6x and the total lengh 13.5” would fit between my BUIS sights on the Stag15. I purchased this from Scott at Liberty Optics www.libertyoptics.com . I would highly recommend you guys call Scott for your optic needs. He is passionate in his commitment to selling optics. During my initial request for pricing (via email), he has called me (on his dime) several times to discuss my needs and offer suggestions. The other vendors I went to just answer my email with pricing and not concerned with my application. I find Scott’s customer service outstanding!! (He even called me a 3rd time to let me know my package is on the delivery truck)!. The only thing I’m waiting for now is the Larue LT104 mount. Thanks to all for your inputs!

Gray, it has been a pleasure serving you, and helping you meet your optics requirements. Thank you for your business, and enjoy the Bushnell 6500.

Be sure to let us know how the Bushnell works out for you. There's not a lot of feedback out there on the 6500 series, but if it's a step up from the 4200, it should quite a good scope.

The Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8x36mm MR/T are nice I really like them with the M2 1/2moa turret for tactical target shooting.

The Nightforce 2.5x10x24 NXS are great scope also very well made but I highly recommend getting the 0-Stop on it.

The ACOGS are one of the best AR15 platform optics you can get. The ACOG 4x32 TA31RCO-M4 is set up for a 14” to 16” barrel.

If you have a 16” barrel I would not recommend the NF or the Leupold you have listed unless you are just shooting of a bench or you have a heavy barrel. I would recommend the Leupold MR/T 1.5-5x SPR or the NF 1-4x24mm w/ the 0-Stop.
